George Clooney is taking on World War II and he's put together quite an impressive cast of actors for the period drama The Monuments Men. Clooney will also direct the co-production between Sony Pictures and 20th Century Fox.

Deadline reports that James Bond himself, Daniel Craig will headline the film and he'll be joined by (clockwise below) Bill Murray, Cate Blanchett, Bob Balaban (Moonrise Kingdom), Jean Dujardin (The Artist), John Goodman and Hugh Bonneville (Downtown Abbey).

The drama was written by Clooney and his writing partner Grant Heslov and focuses on the final chapter of Germany's rule. Hitler and the Nazis try to cover the tracks of their murderous reign while a crew of art historians and museum curators unite to recover renown works of art that were stolen by Nazis before Hitler destroys them.

The film beings production on March 1 in Europe and its possible we might see this in theaters right in time for a 2014 awards season run.

What do you think of this cast? Does Clooney appear to have a potential award-winner in the making?
