My three-year old is completely obsessed with everything Jurassic, which is why I am thrilled Walking with Dinosaurs is stomping into theaters this week. Dino fever seems to hit kids at different ages, but when my little guy pulls out his prehistoric playset, I have to wonder: what is it about dinosaurs that enchants kids?
I started at the top, posing this question to a paleontologist who said, "Well, dinosaurs are big and children like giraffes and stuff, so there you go." Hmmm. I felt I should dig deeper.
An article I found online hypothesized that fossils are cool and dinos roamed the Earth with no rules. I’m pretty sure my three-year old thinks rules are for suckers.
Maybe it’s just that dinos look weird, say hello with a roar, and operate so differently from the other creatures in our modern world. It’s a perfect recipe for imagination – the one thing little kids do access better than grown-ups.
Here are three movies to see with your family this week:
Walking with Dinosaurs 3D. To address the Gorgosaurus in the room, can you take a tot? My very active three-year-old was mesmerized: CGI creatures are incredible, the humor involves the familiar (pooping and throwing up), and it successfully shows kids that dinos were scary enough to get a PG rating but won’t actually scare them.
Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues. Ron Burgundy is “kind of a big deal” among teens and tweens, but it’s got to be SO INAPPROPRIATE. Well, yes, but it’s all sort of inappropriate with a message, as in racial jokes that prove that way of thinking is outdated and dumb.
Frozen. A sister story, a princess movie, a catchy musical, a pet reindeer and cinema’s most lovable snowman – there’s something for everyone in this winter tale.
