After 2009 saw a re-birth (of sorts) of low-budget science fiction, Hollywood is now racing to ride that sci-fi wave toward discovering the next Cloverfield, District 9 or Paranormal Activity. Essentially, they want to find the next low-budget film that they can then turn into a monster blockbuster and make boatloads of money. (And hey, it's a win-win for everyone – they make money and we get a really cool flick.)
Brett Ratner is behind this latest project, but only as an executive producer since he helped in the acquisition deal. Relativity Media has picked up the film, titled Skyline, which comes to us from the Brothers Strause – Greg and Colin – who were visual effects artists on films like Avatar and Iron Man 2, and also helmed the second Alien vs. Predator movie (which we won't directly blame on them because it wasn't their baby).
In Skyline, a group of friends return home from an all-night party to realize they're among a small handful of survivors on Earth and that humanity has been wiped out by some deadly unknown force. Previous interviews with the Strause boys have concluded that the force is of an alien nature, which leads me to believe that aliens have arrived on Earth and wiped out all human beings in an effort to … steal our natural resources? Who knows, but whenever aliens come to Earth it's usually to swipe something of ours before annihilating the human race. Thieves! They're all thieves!
The cast is familiar to those who watch a lot of TV, as it features Eric Balfour (24), Scottie Thompson (Trauma), David Zayas (Dexter), Donald Faison (Scrubs) and Brittany Daniel (The Game). No word on a release date yet, but the film wrapped production not long ago and should arrive in theaters at some point within the next several months.
