Both 20th Century Fox and director Neill Blomkamp have confirmed that his next movie will, in fact, be an Alien sequel. Blomkamp broke the news on Instagram yesterday. Considering she's part of the film's concept art (see below) and happens to be starring in Blomkamp's upcoming Chappie -- and she even confirmed she's willing to do an Alien movie with Blomkamp -- we assume Sigourney Weaver will reprise her Ellen Ripley character one more time. Note that this Alien sequel is not Prometheus 2 (The Wrap says the new Alien sequel will take place after Prometheus 2), but we do wonder whether the two will cross over in some way -- after all, the "shared universe" is all the rage these days.
In January Blomkamp (District 9, Elysium) shared some fantastic, unofficial Alien concept art via social media, which he described as "a mental stroll into the world Ridley Scott created." He noted that the art was "done by [an] awesome French concept artist. Developed idea and art, but I don't think I'll make it," adding that it had "nothing to do" with 20th Century Fox. Blomkamp even went on to add that the studio had no idea he was working on the film, which looks to be set after the second Alien film.
But after the art stormed online social circles, both Blomkamp and the studio realized this was a film that needed to happen for real. No other details are available at this time, though Ridley Scott will produce and we expect Blomkamp to move pretty quickly on the project once he's finished promoting Chappie, in theaters March 6.
Here's what Blomkamp told ComingSoon.net last week:
“[Sigourney] knows about it and part of it was just inspired by speaking to her on set when we were filming ‘Chappie,’ and getting her thoughts on ‘Alien’ and what she thought of the movies that came after ‘Aliens’ and what she felt about Ripley and what was incomplete for her about Ripley. There was so much fuel in what she was telling me.”
