Welcome to our first box office post of 2010! For the past few weeks, James Cameron’s Avatar has absolutely owned the top of the box office, raking in over $1.4 billion worldwide giving it the number two spot on the list of highest grossing films of all time (behind Titanic, which is at $1.8 billion). But now that we’re four weeks in, perhaps these new kids on the block can finally shake Avatar from the number one spot. Let’s take a look…

What’s the Scoop: Based on one of my all-time favorite books, Michael Cera stars as an awkward hipster-teen who invents a much cooler, risk-taking alter-ego in order to help him win the girl of his dreams.

Why It Might Win the Weekend: Who doesn’t like Michael Cera when he’s stumbling over himself while trying to woo the ladies? Oh, and it’s also a funny comedy that’s getting pretty good reviews … so it has that going for it, which is nice.

What’s the Scoop: When a plague transforms almost every human being into a vampire, a researcher works with a covert group of vampires to try to figure out a way to save humankind.

Why It Might Win the Weekend: Strong advance buzz and vampires certainly won’t hurt the film, especially as all those who already saw Avatar look to quench their thirst for more on-screen bloodsuckers.

What’s the Scoop: Amy Adams stars as a girl who travels all the way to Ireland to propose to her boyfriend on leap day because, according to tradition, he cannot turn her down. But when she starts falling for the guy that’s traveling with her, romantic complications ensue.

Why It Might Win the Weekend: Well, Amy Adams does bring the adorable factor, and everyone loves a cutesy rom-com, right? But it’s not in 3D, so…

My Prediction: Avatar made $68 million last weekend, and I can’t imagine the film will drop off enough to let one of these new flicks steal the top spot. So, yeah, I’m going with Avatar…again.
