Intro: The Alamo Drafthouse has quickly garnered a reputation as one of the greatest movie theaters in the history of mankind…or at least the history of movie theaters. With their signature events, ample food and drink selection, and strict no-talking policy, they make obsolete all tawdry multiplexes and completely redefine the movie-going experience. In conjunction with @Google's speakers series, founder and CEO Tim League talked about a violent shooting-turned-murder outside Tim's first movie theater following a concert was what forced him to shut its doors and move to Austin, where he would open his first Alamo Drafthouse. Alamo Survivor’s Tip: Vigilante, as Lars indicated, is a movie that gets too easily relegated to the b-movie category and therefore goes woefully unseen. It is a film that artfully combines exploitation and auteur cinematic elements to create something truly remarkable. If you’ve never seen William Lustig’s Vigilante, its presentation in 35mm at the Drafthouse represents the perfect introduction.

Genre chameleon Enzo Castellari always had a gift for directing violence - and the violence in this film can stand with anything before or since. It’s easy to trace the commercial lineage of the film - it’s in the vein of Dirty Harry and The French Connection - but the kinetic setpieces, the chases, shootouts and explosions take up 90% of the screen time, with very little time devoted to boring exposition. If all action movies were this exciting, nobody would get anything done. As the police inspector on the verge of a caffeine OD, Franco Nero looks like he’s going to explode, literally. Giant blood vessels stand out of his forehead as he slaps the shit out of nearly everyone he encounters. Featuring one of the most gruesome motorcycle murder/castration scenes ever.
