We have one week left before The Avengers begins its box office domination (which we're already seeing overseas), but until then let's breathe and focus and not freak out over just how awesome this summer's crop of movies looks. We can do that by sliding into the last of what the month of April is offering up, including a fun romantic comedy, an action flick, a quirky misadventure from those Aardman Animation folks and a dark trip back through the mind of Edgar Allan Poe. Let's take a closer look ...
The Five-Year Engagement
What's the Scoop: Director Nicholas Stoller (Forgetting Sarah Marshall) reteams with Jason Segel on this romantic comedy that follows the trials and tribulations of an engaged couple (played by Segel and Emily Blunt) planning their wedding.
Why It Might Win the Weekend: It's been just about a year since Bridesmaids exploded in theaters, and so perhaps folks are itching for another wedding comedy to celebrate. If so, have at it!
What's the Scoop: John Cusack stars as a young detective who's on the hunt for a killer inspired by the works of Edgar Allan Poe.
Why It Might Win the Weekend: Because the film allows you to enjoy a dark tale about a serial killer and learn more about a famous poet at the same time!
The Pirates! Band of Misfits
What's the Scoop: The folks who brought you Chicken Little return with another adventure featuring a pirate who sets out to defeat his rivals in an effort to win the Pirate of the Year award.
Why It Might Win the Weekend: This is really your own option for the younger ones, plus Aardman always puts out quality entertainment that's sure to please both kids and adults.
What's the Scoop: Jason Statham plays an ex-cage fighter who sets out to protect a young girl being pursued by all sorts of danger, including the gangsters who destroyed his life.
Why It Might Win the Weekend: Because Jason Statham is a badass, that's why. But seriously, word has it this is Statham's best action movie yet, and while it's true he tends to star in the same kinds of movies, we're not complaining because somebody has to do it and he always makes it look pretty awesome.
My Prediction: There's a lot of new content this weekend, but I'm feeling the wedding comedy, The Five-Year Engagement. That film looks to have a little something for everyone, except those guys looking to dodge that engagement ring purchase.
My Pick of the Week: There's a lot of new stuff in wide release, and there's just as many new films in limited release too. I am very high on Headhunters, a fantastic Norwegian crime thriller, and Sound of My Voice, about two journalists who infiltrate a cult in an attempt to expose its leader as a fraud. Highly recommend both films.
Now it's your turn -- sound off below and let us know which film you think will win the weekend box office.
