You Choose Will Smith's Next Role!

By: Erik Davis on March 24, 2010 at 4:09PM Comments (23)

Looks like Will Smith needs some help deciding which film he should make next, and while he's not exactly asking for fan input, I know the readers of Fandango could probably help push him in the right direction. Does he read this blog? Probably, it's pretty awesome. But on the off chance that he doesn't, let's voice our opinion loud enough so that he can see (and hear) it.

Will Smith

Basically, it comes down to this: Smith is currently trying to decide between two films for his next project. The first is Men in Black III, which we've talked about before. It's a pretty big sequel; Sony is rumored to be bringing on lots of new talent (like Josh Brolin and Sacha Baron Cohen), and, like the first two films, we know it's something that will at the very least entertain us for a couple hours with its alien jokes and creepy special effects.

His second option is a family film called The City That Sailed, about a New York street magician (note: I live in New York, and while there are plenty of street musicians, I've never seen a street magician) who is unhappily separated from a daughter that lives all the way in England. However, that begins to change when his daughter finds magic candles and uses them to make a wish that comes true – making it so the island of Manhattan detaches from the United States and begins floating toward England, this way father and daughter can be with each other at last. Why she didn't just wish for a simple plane ticket is beyond me.

My Choice: Personally – and I usually never go with the sequel over the original film – I think I'm leaning toward Men in Black 3 on this one. The whole detached island family-adventure thing sounds a tad bit weird, though I'm sure there's a lot more to it than that. Plus I live near the island of Manhattan, and going to see a film like that might freak me out a bit.

What do you think? Which film should Will Smith take on next?

I adore Mr. Will Smith and his wife Jada, I would love to see him in MIB 3, and I would also would like to see him and Jada consider doing a movie about Dr Martin Luther King and his wife. Dr King's love of life and work for Peace among people of ALL Colour is just what we need now. Mr Smith would be great doing a movie of his own life as he is a role model for young men that need that extra push, that encouragement, belief that you can achieve your dreams, but you must be willing to work for them. I applaud his home and work ethic. He is inspiring, encouraging and uplifting. It is the Content of his Character......not the colour of his skin

Mr. Smith has proven himself to be a great actor no matter what the role. Quite honestly I love the dramatic roles from him but he really makes me laugh and I have been missing that. MIBs are smart pure entertainment and I like that thrown in the mix. I think that if the family movie is the role for him they will wait while he does MIB III.

Why go back to the movie trough? Oh I know why...because people are for the most part mindless sheep. Of course the votes are 81% for MIB3 at the moment, The low IQ'd "unimind" of the country said, "Huh huh huh, we liked Men Black one and two yes we did yes we did, it done't did maked us laugh huh huh huh." Coming from a novelist the island idea is a bit more artistic and not just pandering to the movie-going wallet. MIB3, while entertaining, will be the movie equivalent of Brit. Spears spewing another exact duplicate pop record out of her many sludge spurting holes. Please America stop allowing them to dumb you down. The Pre-Viewer

Will Smith is due for a role as a SERIOUS action hero -- he is too deep to repeat starter roles. That is why Seven Pounds was so good. He needs the type of roles that are offered to Russell Crowe or Tom Cruise.

You are a fool, try enjoying the lighter side of life. Pretending to be intellectual does not make you smarter than anyone. Quite honestly your comments are ignorant. Movies were not started to make statements they were for entertainment. Comparing anything that Mr. Smith would do to Britney Spears is just plain stupid.

Actor Mr. Will SMITH is a phenomanal talent and can put electricity into any Role offered him: I like the ideal for the movie "The City that Sailed" sounds mystical Drama/Fantasy. I can see him in such a Fantasy: and plus "more" on the "Men In Black" Classic Franchise and "Wild Wild West" would love to see him do some Western's he was oh so cool/alluring as James West...'he/Will was fantastic in that Role. I can also see him do another "Legend/I Am Legend" - that was powerful/Epic moving my Heart break for him/that movie was so frigthening and scary: just him & his dog all alone on Earth, after an Epic devastration. Also like to see Mr. SMITH as a Super Hero/the SIMS Brothers "BROTHER MAN" Comic books is a Master/Drama Classic series.

Mr. Smith, not that you're reading this, but, would you consider doing neither and waiting until another movie like I-Robot comes up? I mean, come on, picking between another sequel and a corny as all get out movie is like trying to decide between leftovers and cook's choice. We need fresh, raw material. Will Smith is my all-time favorite actor. He does an awesome job with all he's given. When I say I'd rather have him wait than be in a new movie that sounds okay, I mean it.

They are both reruns as far as I'm concerned. It's time to pick an Academy Award role. I want to see him suffer and triumph, cry and laugh. Why not a story about the underground rail road during pre-civil war times? No one has touched Harriot Tubman's work and all the folks she helped.... I'm tired of stupid plots. Let's see "Gone With the Wind" from a completely different perspective. To hell with Scarlett! No one has touched anything close to this since Color Purple.

I am a big fan of Will Smith and I think the best movie I have seen him do was Seven pounds. That was a heartbreaker and his performance shows true depth and character. Pursuit of Happiness showed depths of Will that were truly amazing, showing us what a truly gifted and talented actor that he is. To be that real on the screen, I think, has to come from the depths of an actor that can touch those emotions b/c they are already a basic part of the actor. And make them flow so naturally that it touches every part of human nature. I love his comedies too and I thought he was outstanding in Independence Day. I can't wait to see him in a MIB III. I would love that one!!

Will Smith needs toshowcase his acting abilities beyond what he has done before. The MIB III will certainly be another boockbuster, but is it all about making money? The Pursuit of Happyness was outstanding and showed a completely different side of Mr. Smith. He is much deeper than the comedic characters he has played.
