One of the biggest stories surrounding J.J. Abrams' Star Trek reboot was the inclusion of Leonard Nimoy, reprising his role as Spock from the original films, in a part that was meant to be a sort of torch-passing from the old cast to the new. William Shatner was also supposed to show up in a part at the end, but after all kinds of back-and-forth, the original Captain Kirk never made it into the movie. But that's not to say fans didn't want the original Kirk to play a cameo, and so what are the chances that Abrams finds a way to include Shatner the second time around?
Star Trek 2
I grew up with the OS (Original Series) ....thoroughly enjoyed each movie (even the odd numbered ones)...loved each succeeding series (even Voyager & Enterprise). When Star Trek hit the big screen I immediately knew the franchise had been rebooted. Should Shatner be in ST2? Quite honestly no. He already had his ST2. Let the rebooted franchise live on with the new, extraordinary cast & plot line. I loved everything Shatner "Kirk"...but it's time he let the new "kids" do their thing. Take it on to another generation.
like wow i mean kirk is the man, always has been, you got to show him locking phasers or something, we need the continuity to advance the complete Trekkie experience,so contact the federation and find what their performance parameters might be. and then Capt Kirk will be back, even if its .just as a hologram Make sure Spock is truly up to date on all this, and what his thoughts might be
sir; i beg to differ with your purely light transcendental leaders you try to instill into the rather heated discussion. Spock with his probe is invaluable, but kirks uncanny sense to see peril even before ir rears it;s towering torso....kirks gets it,,,so we must follow
How will they bring Kirk back? Although it is a reboot, it isn't a full reboot. The old Spock came from the original timeline, into the new altered parallel timeline. Therefore, although the new Star Trek is kind of a reboot, it still stays with continuity. The old Spock basically went to the new Universe of the new timeline. In the timeline where the old Spock came from, Kirk is DEAD. Kirk DIED in Star Trek: Generations. If William Shatner comes back as Kirk, it would have to be from a new third timeline.
I TOTALLY DISAGREE!!!! It's refreshing to see the old cast from time to time. Nimoy had his chance, now let Shatner pass his torch. Don't kick out the elders like their a piece of old furniture that you're tired of. Elders have a place, they bring to the table EXPERIENCE.
I am a Trekkie and I have to say, they did a great job at casting for this last Star Trek movie. Most of the main cast members resemble and act like their old counterparts.
Totally agree. Zachary Quinto, Chris Pine, Simon Pegg and the rest need to develop their characters their way without relying on the original cast. Now I love Star Trek, but not so much that I can't appreciate another actor stepping in to an established role and giving his or her take on it.
I agree with Tiffany Taylor above... I too am a huge Star Trek fan and a William Shatner fan, but Shatner should not be in these new series of movies as some version of Kirk. In these new universe, Chris Pine is Kirk. Period. Get over it. HOWEVER, I do also agree with djboca: it would be great to see Shatner in the movie playing some other role... with alien makeup, etc. That'd be a hoot.
and it would draw in the Trekkies who would by no other means see this movie. it is a great idea and i agree with you completely.
The torch is passed, long may it burn.
First and foremost, I'm a Trekkie. But, I agree. The train has left the station. Let's learn more about the new characters rather than continue to bring back the old.
I completely disagree! Your saying using original cast members as a crutch is a bad thing? I was there September 8th 1966 when the first episode of Star Trek aired (On NBC) and I have not missed an ep. since! We Trekkies, yes, Trekkies, not Trekers are are the ones who made the whole franchise what it is today. Shouldn't we get a say in which crutch we want? They don't even have to bring back all of the original cast, just Kirk. Com'on, be reasonable!
I agree, the new alternate reality is set and should only use the new cast.
Agreed but what about Shatner playing some bit character in costume/makeup as they did for the TNG/DS9/etc.? A line or two in costumer, not as Kirk but as some ancillary character just to have him involved. "Sounds like fun!"
I agree completely. It made sense with the story in the first one but to use it as a crutch is stupid. the New cast is great, they've got great writers and of course JJ, so I have faith in the new Star Trek crew, on and off screen.
"Welcome to the party, pal."
"I am serious... and don't call me Shirley."
"When am I gonna learn how to punch?"
"These go to eleven."
"Benjamin, have you ever been severely beaten about the face & neck?"
"Just keep swimming, swimming, swimming."
"You're gonna need a bigger boat."
"Jessica's got cable."
