Weekend Chatter: Study Says Audiences Love 3D As 'Avengers' Kicks Off Summer Movie Season. Do You Agree?

Let’s take a break from the heated debate over the allowance of texting in movie theaters, and transition into something equally controversial: 3D movies!

According to a recent study conducted on behalf of the International 3D Society (via Business Wire), a large majority of audiences who watched at least one 3D movie in the past three years found the experience to be more enjoyable than that of a 2D movie.

“Moviegoers continue to enjoy quality 3D movies,” said Society President Jim Chabin. “Consumers are savvy in selecting what movies to watch in 3D, but according to our results, they feel it is clearly a more fun, more exciting, and a more valuable experience.”

Specific numbers break down as such: 52% of those surveyed admit to seeing at least one 3D movie on the past three years. A whopping 71% of those people said the 3D experience surpassed a 2D experience, with 31% of the 3D moviegoers using the word "incredible" to describe their experience.

That’s music to the collective ears of movie studio executives and theater owners, as 3D tickets come with an increased charge at the box office (obviously). It also justifies the increased crop of 3D movies that are in Hollywood’s pipeline for the upcoming summer, starting with Joss Whedon’s The Avengers, which launches the season on May 4.

But it directly contradicts what I would have believed, and that’s that modern audiences are tired of 3D and view it as a gimmick that isn’t working. For every Avatar, which makes excellent use of the added dimension, there is a Wrath of the Titans, which absolutely does not need to be enhanced and often looks worse as a result of hurried conversion.

So tell us, what do you think of 3D movies today? Are they better than 2D? Do you think they are “incredible,” as the survey suggests? And of the various 3D movies on the horizon this summer – from Men in Black 3 to Brave or The Amazing Spider-Man – which ones will you absolutely see in 3D?

I dislike 3-D. I would rather watch it in 2-D. From articles I have read, they show more people paying for 2-D not 3-D. I will be seeing Avengers in 2-D with all my friends. The study is obviously flawed to get more people to buy 3-D.

3D is a crock. I hate it the most when movies are ONLY in 3D, it leads me to not watching them at all until Blu Ray release. There is no way 3D will be the movies of the futures and I believe there will always be 2D. I will NOT be seeing this movie in 3D, or any other movies. Hopefully it will relieve some of the 2D screenings congestion with people paying more for the same movie in 3D...

I hate 3D! I have seen two movies in 3D, and only because my kids really wanted to see them and they weren't available in 2D. 3D gives me a terrible headache and it's not worth the money.

Unless the movie was made specifically for 3D (i.e. Avatar or Hugo), I'm not interested. I don't enjoy the 3D experience at all. The glasses are uncomfortable, the screen gives me a headache and my wallet is far too light afterwards. It's like IMAX. If it's not meant to be seen in IMAX, I'm not going to spend that extra money. I'll stick with live theater and 2D movies, thank you very much.

It would be interesting to see how many people are seeing 3D movies.I refuse to see a 3D movie and how my area is, if it is not in 2D, I will skip the movie. This is why the movie industry is doing bad because I have talked to many people in my area and refuse the same reasons. 3D will eventually do damage to the human eye. My first job at the theater is when the IMAX business grew. Then the 3D movies began to increase at the IMAX. 3D movies were meant for short films up to 45 minutes. Anything more would hurt the human eyes. I would like to see a real survey on here about how many attend 3D movies.

3D is just a terrible money grab. If I ever have a choice, I will be going to the 2D version. 3D adds nothing except expense for me. It is really starting to annoy me that my theater is starting to put the 2D movies at awful times and the 3D version at prime times. So, many times, we're forced to go 3D. That is skewing some results towards 3D where they would not be if there were actual choice.

3D is great, it's the dramatic rise in prices for the "upgrade" that is the problem. Therefore it becomes a pick and choose if you are on a budget if it's worth paying for it. If it's a movie i'm very excited to see, I will see it in 3D. If not, I may just avoid it all together because I know the experience will be better in 3D but I won't want to pay for either 2D or 3D.

3D is nothing more than a money grab. I believe the industry has said as much. "We're not making enough money." Well big deal. Nobody is making enough money. I'd love to trade salary earnings with any Hollywood movie. We shouldn't have to have cheesy 3D thrown onto every single movie these days. I avoid it like the plague. I have the chance to see The Avengers in 3D for FREE, but I will gladly PAY for my 2D ticket instead. Thank you.

I do find it interesting that two of the highest-grossing films (likely) when the year is over -- The Hunger Games and The Dark Knight Rises -- will be 2D films that relied on strong storytelling, and not 3D as its selling point. That being said, the 3D ion AVENGERS is very good.

I've learned how to spot "bad 3D", so the aforementioned Wrath of the Titans got a pass from me. But the others you listed, MiB3, Brave, Spiderman and most definitely The Avengers, I'll be seeing all of them in 3D. I would agree that most of the ones I watch in 3D are 'incredible', and as opposed to mummbler78, I readily "flock to" 3D movies. I love the tech and own nearly two dozen Blu-Ray 3D movies. I support this survey.

3D is Great when it is displayed properly. Unfortunately 3D Blu-ray movies at home look better on my LG Cinema HDTV than when I originally saw them at a Movie Theater.
