The original Superman movie used the tagline, “You will believe a man can fly.” Based on the below trailer, James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy can go with, “You will believe an angry raccoon can fire a machine gun!”

The trailer, which debuted on the Jimmy Kimmel talk show Tuesday evening, gives audiences their first introduction to the Guardians… an offbeat band of intergalactic superheroes that Marvel hopes will carry the company’s banner into Phase Three and beyond. The leader (if you want to call him that) is Star-Lord, a thief played by Chris Pratt of Moneyball and The Lego Movie

But as you can see, as the trailer continues, Star-Lord’s teammates are NOT The Avengers. There’s Rocket – the aforementioned angry raccoon (voiced by Bradley Cooper). Groot is a treelike creature. And the lethal pair of Gamora and Drax the Destroyer round out the team.

Yep. Not your daddy’s band of heroes.

Marvel faces a tough sell with the Guardians. They are not Iron Man nor Captain America. The casual comic book fan has to be educated. But the use of “Hooked on a Feeling” and the general tone of the teaser suggests a lot more humor than we see in hero movies these days (thanks, Batman), so that’s an instant bonus.

As expected, the Internet went berserk after the trailer dropped:
