In addition to recent reports that Warner Bros. has hired writers for adaptation of long-gestating projects, Justice League and Wonder Woman, comes news that the studio is mulling over what to do with the Green Lantern franchise.
The film suffered a disappointing run in theaters last year, grossing $220 million worldwide against a $200 million production budget. The studio is debating on whether to bring back star Ryan Reynolds for a sequel or re-launch the character with a new actor. What that re-launch would entail is up for discussion as DC Comics recently reintroduced the Green Lantern character as their newly gay superhero.
Green Lantern screenwriters Greg Berlanti, Michael Green and Marc Guggenheim turned in an outline for the sequel last year, but the studio was expected to make significant changes if not start completely from scratch.
DC is moving forward with other comic book properties, developing solo films for Aquaman, Shazam, Green Arrow and The Suicide Squad. Whatever direction Warner Bros. decides to take with Green Lantern and the rest of the DC Comics heroes, Variety reports that executives have learned a valuable lesson from the success of The Avengers. Though it may seem like common sense to most of us, executives said they need "to tap creative that genuinely understand the characters the way Joss was comfortable with The Avengers."
What do you think WB should do with Green Lantern? Keep Reynolds, re-cast the character, or work him into the Justice League a la The Hulk was brought back in The Avengers?

Ryan Reynolds, Green Lantern
Looked to me like a giant dust bunny. The villain was probably the biggest of the flaws of the movie. My daughter told me while we were watching a trailer for the movie that it would bomb, so I suspect that a big part of its box office failure was poor marketing, as was clearly the case with John Carter.
I think Ryan Reynolds actually did a good job portraying Green Lantern. The script could have been a little better though. If a sequel is done/reboot I think they should keep Ryan Reynolds as the Green Lantern and give him another shot!
KEEP RYAN REYNOLDS!
Yes he needs a better script and/or directing. I liked the first GL movie though it could clearly have been better. I really don't think that Reynolds was to blame.
For me as a viewer, the movie was most enjoyable when Reynolds was on the screen. The parts focusing on the relationship with the female lead were allowed to bog down the pace and other plot developing scenes were badly placed or just plain distracting.
Reynolds is a great fit to play Hal Jordan because he has such a sense of humor, can pull off the cocky attitude without seeming like a douche and then put on a great serious face when a GL battle calls for it.
Also it's nice to have super-hero with a build somewhere between Spiderman and He-Man.
Look. bring in characters like John stewert and Guy gardner. also the battles should take place on another realm/universe. Not earth.
Give Kilowog more screen time
Please keep Ryan , And No gay twist or this next lantern will be a bigger flawp
Good point! No need for the gay twist, the movie will definitely suffer!! ...and keep the same actor!
Bryan R. was one of the good things the movie had going for it. How about...take away the movie and leave him!? How sad…put a dent in his career and then try to pin the failure on him. He is a fantastic actor, with a great comedy since and he’s very attractive. Just give him some better material to work with.
They could do another Green Lantern with a different Earth Green Lantern. Guy Gardner comes to mind. If they did a Justice League Movie, just bring back Reynolds with a re-introduction. Problem solved.
Green Lantern would have been better if the main bad guy wasn't a giant smoke monster. I don't blame Ryan Reynolds, but I must admit that the idea of a Green lantern movie with the John Stewart Green Lantern does sound extremely interesting.
Keep Ryan Reynolds.
Who is the Justice League...?
Green Lantern is not a character worth rebooting because 1)Ryan Reynolds was fine 2)a sequel won't do well in the box office and 3)John Stewart's or Guy Gardner's version of Green Lantern would be the next logical choice. HOWEVER, if a Justice League movie is in the works then it's a different matter entirely.
Ryan Reynolds was fine as the lantern. It was the story and the use of his powers that was weak. from the above comments, it looks like all people care about is the characters sexual preferance- trolls will troll. lets face it, the problem is DC characters other than batman and superman are just not as popular as the Marvel universe ensemble. You can name more villans of the X-men before you can name POPULAR DC heroes. Thats the problem.
Agreed the characters aren't as popular. I don't care 4 the sexual preference, its just - like politics - the creators of the film thought going there would create a buzz and people would be screaming from the social media roof-tops for more Green Lantern. It came and went. It didn't work and neither will this. I do want a movie about Gambit (my fav. X-Men character).
Its a ploy to make money. After turning him gay - their trying to capitalize on the success of the Avengers. Leave it alone because its a film already molded as a failure. John Carter is another on called a failure and you don't see them rebooting it.
& I saw the film a few weeks ago on HBO or Showtime and I enjoyed it.
If they were to make GL character gay I wouldn't go see it and I went to see the original movie in theaters.
Yes, I also agree! What is going on with the Wonder Woman movie? Was it completed axed from moving forward? Why tease the fans then?
I loved the Green Lantern movie myself. I don't really know what is going on in the movie industry. As a comic book fan the movie was Awesome! Yes, it would never compare to our comics since everything written in cartoon cannot be brought to life most of the time. Also, if you don't give Ryan Reynolds a good manuscript how can he play the part. Now as for DC Comic making Green Lantern Gay is just a complete twist to what we have read since I was growing up. I really think Ryan should keep his part and DC should continue the sequel as the previous comic storyline. Then later on introduce the next Green Lantern as the Gay subject. Unless DC already thought who would play that part? That is Hollywood for you...
I would give him a second chance. The movie implied a sequel which has potential to be fantastic. Write a better script with Sinestro as the main villain. I'd love to see that movie. Or make Justice League then make Green Lantern 2.
There are many versions and variations of Green Lantern. If the studios decide to tell the reboot storys from the new 52 line they might as well reboot the entire universe. Now that Nolan's Batman trilogy is coming to an end you could reboot everthing and do a DC version of what marvel did. Superman movie, Batman movie, WONDER WOMAN MOVIE (why hasn't this been made yet??!!), Green Lantern and Aqua-Man then make a Justic League movie. If you reboot I'd really like to see Nathan Fillion as Green Lantern actually.
Thank you! I was really disappointed when Fillion wasn't given a shot. Reynolds, whom I think is great, did as good of job as possible with the script/story; it was good, just not "knock my socks off" good. I also agree, where's the WW movie? (as long as they don't change the costume like they talked about).
I'm all for a JL movie but I'd prefer Bale as Batman in that and RR as GL.
The Green Lantern that is gay is not Hal Jordan. It isn't even a Green Lantern in the current continuity. It is a Green Lantern from Earth 2, Alan Scott. Who, for the past 70 years or so, was straight with two kids, one of whom was gay. Now he is gay. But, Hal Jordan is not.
Will Hal be comfortable as a homosexual super hero? Is he ready for a few close encounters with his green buddies in space? Will we have to sit through him making green necklaces for his boy crushes, or will he be portrayed a bi- for the fans?
If there is no change in the character, then there's no need for a change in the actor.
Hal Jordan isn't a homosexual, the original Green Lantern is.
"Welcome to the party, pal."
"I am serious... and don't call me Shirley."
"When am I gonna learn how to punch?"
"These go to eleven."
"Benjamin, have you ever been severely beaten about the face & neck?"
"Just keep swimming, swimming, swimming."
"You're gonna need a bigger boat."
"Jessica's got cable."
