Last time we brought up the recent Top Gun 2 news, a whole bunch of you (53 to be exact) chimed in with your thoughts on whether we even want (or need) a Top Gun sequel. A lot of you were strongly against any sort of reboot or reimagining, which is good because director Tony Scott doesn't want a reboot or reimagining either.
Speaking to HitFix while out promoting Unstoppable, Scott confirmed that he will direct, though at the same time admitted that there isn't even a script yet. That script, whenever it does arrive, will probably solidify whether or not Tom Cruise will actually reprise the role of Maverick in some capacity. So if Scott doesn't want a reboot or a reinvention, what exactly will this film be about? He notes, "I'm not waiting for a script. I'm going to do my homework. I'm going down to I think it's Fallon, Nevada, down near New Mexico and it's a whole different world now. These computer geeks -- these kids play war games in a trailer in Fallon, Nevada, and if we ever went to war or were in the Middle East or the Far East or wherever it is, these guys can actually fly drones. They are unmanned aircraft. They operate them and then they party all night."
Sure, it's interesting that these guys hole up in a tent and can fly unmanned planes halfway around the world, but where's the action in that? Perhaps they're somehow thrust into action when equipment fails, or maybe the film won't be an action movie and instead will focus on the relationships these guys have with each other and their families? How Cruise would fit into all this we do not know, but at least this is confirmation that a Top Gun sequel is very much in the works as we speak.
