You knew this was bound to happen eventually, since it's been something we've been talking about for years. Yes, fans, George Lucas and LucasFilm have announced that beginning in 2012, they'll be re-releasing all six Star Wars films in theaters in 3D. The plan right now is to release one film per year, beginning with Episode I: The Phantom Menace.
Star Wars, 3-D, George Lucas
Fanboy Fix, 3D
We won't see 7-9 because if you weren't aware, a live action TV series is being developed. The success of these re-releases could be enough to fund it and make it happen.
Of course it's a cash grab. But if you love the movies (I've watched every movie so many more times than anyone can count I even keep my original VHS collectors editions sets, even though I don't even own a VHS player, or even plan on watching the VHS versions ever again) then this is good news. Don't hate the idea. If you don't like them, don't watch them. Very simple.
Plus with all the technology they have access to, and can create, I believe the conversion will be very good.
I watch the movies on my PC with 3D conversion already (with Nvidia Nvision glasses, and it already look ok. When there is a full process into creating better 3D effects, it has the possibility of looking just as good (if not better) than any 3D movie right now.)
"Star Wars" Back in theaters??? Bring them on!!! I love all 6 episodes. Ive seen em all in theaters, I own all of them. I am a hugh fan of Star Wars. I will have my tickets when they are out, "in advance". Thank you George Lucas!!!
I bet you ten dollars it won't be the "ORIGINAL" content. They already changed the film edited out scenes for the DVD release. If they are gonna bring it back at least bring back the "ORIGINAL MOVIE" not some hack job. Sigh... Religion freaks these days. What will the complain about next?
I certainly welcome it...but it must look pretty GOOD!!!
I think Lucas, like anyone else, would do a cash grab if there was an oppurtunity, who wouldn't? But I think Lucas really cares for his fans, and this is his way to bring these movies back even better, and I"m sure he wil make sure the 3D conversion will be awesome. And if not, I'm still going to see all these movies (again) anyway.
love it can wait til 2012 i m aa get my tickets in advance ...cant get enough star wars been a fan for 27 years that my whole life lol
It may be a "cash grab", who can say; I'd be fooling myself if I let myself believe they weren't hoping to turn a profit from this (likely) expensive project. However, if it's successful it'll be truely KICK @$$!! There are 3 big scenes that would either make or break this enveavor: the assault on the first Death Star (specifically the trench scene), the flight through the asteroid belt, & the assault on the 2nd Death Star (especially the flight through the inner structure & the death of the Super Star Destroyer). If they can't make these scenes look super & not like some pop-up book conversion, then they should hold off with this release until they can. Let's hope that Geroge shows the same brilliance and wisdom as he did "long long ago"!
We're talking about George Lucas here. This is a guy with some VERY strong opinions about how his films should look. Ego or not, it's an artistic vision without compromise. No matter what you think about the stories, dialog, acting or Jar-Jar Binks, Star Wars I - III were visually GORGEOUS. Add another ten years of technical advancements and I'm sure that these 3D re-releases will be stunning.
Cash grab? Sure it is, but movie making is, in the end, a BUSINESS, and making money is what it's all about. Of course, when you have total control of the finished product, you can afford to be "an artist".
Will I go see them? You betcha. And I'm sure my two sons will be standing in line right beside me.
There are no episodes 7,8 or 9 in the works. Lucas has stated this on several occasions. I would much rather have Lucas create brand new movies, new worlds, new stories than to have him constantly dragging out the Star Wars franchise. Even if it flops, I would applaud the effort to bring something new to the table.
He's got millions of dollars and legions of fans so it isn't like he's going to go broke if an original project doesn't fly. Take a chance, Mr. Lucas - don't keep feeding us the same fare over and over.
Bravo! I agree here too. Whatever happend to the writter George Lucas? He has to have another idea floating around in that big head of his somewhere
I would love to see these moives released in blu-ray format, rather than 3D. I feel thats the way they were meant to be enjoyed, a beautiful clear print in 2D.
Haters and more Haters! C,mon, I can't wait. Instead of being so cynical about it why not just enjoy the fact that the movies are coming back to the big screen. I never got to see these on the big screen so it will be nice to get that chance. It's Star Wars people. I would watch it in Spanish or German. It makes no difference to me I have seen them so many times and can watch them over and over again. As far as the money ting goes who cares. I am a firm believer in capitalism. He has something that will sell day in and day out. If I had that, I would do the same thing. You go Lucas... You will have my 60 bucks in movie theater money to see the whole trilogy. Hell I will watch them back to back multiple times in the theater.
Very true. I've owned VHS and DVD copies of them, but no matter how large of a TV I own, they will NEVER look as good as they do on a theater screen. That and one of my fondest memories was waiting for four hours to see Return of the Jedi and the sounds of the audience as the movies started. Priceless.
Wankers, quit your whining. Of course it's a money grab--why else would GL re-release Star Wars? Duh. If all you can do is snivel about the rich getting richer, then you need to a) don't watch the 3D versions, ever, b) stop whining and go find a way to make money yourself. May Darths Mall and Vader, the evil emperor and The Force twist you into another dimension of reality, as in help you grow up.
WASTED MONEY?? Please..for those of you bashers that weren't alive in 1977 to see the original in the theatres for the first run..this is gonna be SWEET!
Lucasfilm denounces Blu-Ray hi-def saying it will soon become "obsolete" yet they are going to take 2 years to convert all the SW movies to 3D?! I'm a die hard but the original trilogy in 3D is blasphemous. The prequel trilogy might b ok, cuz theres not really anything to mess up there.
Exactly. Kids these days love 3D. if we (us old school peeps) show our kids the original 2D classic versions, they'll probably think we're old and boring. Plus Lucas can go licensing all the way on this with video games and toys. He does have a small business to run in Marin Co.
I will be at the midnight premier! This is the best news Ive heard all year. Ya its a cash grab but who cares its star wars! Its worth the cash!
Jar Jar Binks in 3D? I'm still trying to forget him in 2D. Ewoks in 3D? I could pass on that too. Wringing the profits for sure, but will allow a new generation to see the saga on the big screen; can't be all bad. $15-20 a ticket... I'll probably pass. May the Force be with you!
Are you kidding....would definately take my 7 yr old star wars freak to see this. He would love to see the original movies on the big screen AND IN 3D - that will literally blow his mind. I want Lucas to create more Star Wars movies....more more more!
The next generation will LOVE it and come to appreciate the Star Wars movies as much as we do. I thought my 9 yo was going to faint with happiness when he heard this:)
I was 7 years old when I saw the original in 1977 in Canada before it was released in the US. I was blown away then and it has been a part of my life ever since. George Lucas is the artist and owner here, and I am curious to see what new spin he can put on this. Of course I will go see the movies in 3D. Am I a fan of Jar Jar Binks and Episode I? No. George could have done better with Episode I. But that doesn't mean I will ignore his new vision and deny it exists. I will see what he does with this and enjoy.
What ever happened to real film making? Where is the creativity? So far 3D is just another technological gimmick. Is there not anyone in the industry who knows how to shoot a film with one camera
Here's the thing. I think I was around 23-24 when I saw the first Star Wars movie and remain a huge fan of them all (although some lot more than others).. My son, who is almost 30, is an even bigger fan. I say let the next generation have an opportunity to see the Star Wars films on the big screen... 3-D or not.
"Welcome to the party, pal."
"I am serious... and don't call me Shirley."
"When am I gonna learn how to punch?"
"These go to eleven."
"Benjamin, have you ever been severely beaten about the face & neck?"
"Just keep swimming, swimming, swimming."
"You're gonna need a bigger boat."
"Jessica's got cable."
