You knew this was bound to happen eventually, since it's been something we've been talking about for years. Yes, fans, George Lucas and LucasFilm have announced that beginning in 2012, they'll be re-releasing all six Star Wars films in theaters in 3D. The plan right now is to release one film per year, beginning with Episode I: The Phantom Menace.
Star Wars, 3-D, George Lucas
Fanboy Fix, 3D
I'm definitely watching! This is a GREAT idea!!
What a FANTASTIC idea!!! A special w/e for re-showing a great movie once every few years or so would be AMAZING!! As long as they give us lots of advance notice so we can fit it into our lives! There's nothing like seeing the best ones on the BIG screen!!! Sign me up!
I saw the original Star Wars when I was four years old and LOVED IT!!! I had every imaginable toy and action figure. Being a girl I was always Leia when playing with the neighborhood boys (girls were too busy with Barbie). So many wonderful memories!
Now I have a nine & six year old who have discovered Star Wars. I can't wait to take them to the theater to see the movies. They have only seen the DVD's and that just doesn't bring the true magic of the film to a television screen. I am intrigued with 3-D, and I know the kids will enjoy it.
As I type this, my six year old brought a flying Artoo over my keyboard.
And of course Lucas is cashing in. That's his job. He makes movies and reaps the rewards. Wouldn't you?
For all those calling this a "cash grab" QUIT HATING! I am sure if anyone commenting here had come up with a story half as brilliant as Star Wars you would want to share that with the world as many times as you could and enhance it as many times as you could. Sure, Lucas will make money on it, is that not what people in his industry do? Make money? Is that not what fuels further enhnacements in movie making? In my opininion, all those calling this a "cash grab" are not real fans. I will see all 6 of the movies multiple times in theatres because I am a TRUE FAN of the franchise. Now quit hating and go watch crappy Star Trek if you don't like it. Peace...
Awesome will def be their watchin... after all greatness is greatness no matter what..
one way or another, its a chance for us post 80s babies to see these great films on the big screen. I;m seeing them 3D or not.
I am super excited and I am not even really a fan, however my 8 yr old son is a Star Wars Fanatic (he even collects all the legos lol) and I can't wait for him to get a chance to see the movies on the big screen. It will mean so much to him and I can honestly say, we would go see them even if they weren't in 3D.
YES! to Star Wars re-lease in 3-D. Like so many fans, I too have bought every format version of the Star Wars films made so far and from the beginning, I have stood in line to see these films at least 4xs each and watch them whenever they come on TV, etc. A fan? yes! Do I believe in what George Lucas and his people have created over the years? YOU BET! We know that good films make money and classic films are no exception. What's wrong with that? It's what America's supposed to be all about. So bring on more Star Wars, I'll be there to watch them again and again.
I can't see how this is bad, I mean yeah they want money, but if you look at it that way how bout we just stop all movie production, in fact lets stop all entertainment! .....Uh, yeah, no. But, if you aren't a fan of Lucas or Star Wars, what are you doing here in this article anyway? But for those that are true fans, especially ones from more recent years, ie weren't born (like me) or too young when the originals came out, think about it. We can see New Hope, The Empire Strikes Back, The Return of the Jedi in theaters, how awesome is that? Even if you own it already, it's still a great opportunity. I don't even like 3d movies, but if that's all they're coming back in, I'm going and I don't care whose coming with me.
This will be awesome. Not only do the original fans get to relive some of the greatest cinematic adventures on the big screen, but this will definitely bring Star Wars to a whole new audience. Whether it's about money or not, Lucas created something unique that has never been replicated with the Star Wars saga and to continue to reinvent it and bring it to its loyal fans, I can't hate the man for that. And now with 3-D technology at the farthest it has ever been , this is the perfect to go 3-D for Star Wars. And I agree witht the article, Luke Skywalker taking on the Death Star in E4 will look friggin' sweeeeet!
this will be awesome!! and if they do release one per year, starting with E1 in 2012, then it should lead us to right around the time E7 is planned to be released. then E8-12 in years to follow. cant wait!!
You finally really did it! Oh, damn you all! GODDAMN YOU ALL TO HELL!!!!
This movie will be awesome
great idea awesome imagine battle of the clones in three d
You know, there are many ways to look at it and if good old capitalism and the free market system gives Lucas more money-why the heck not!! Primarily however, it gives a new generation, like my son, a chance to see the movies on the big screen and there is no better way to see them! My son is pumped! He is about all things Star Wars and I was as a kid too! This is just one more way that an entire generation of Star Wars fans can connect with families and friends!! I see no downside-if you hate Star Wars-cool-dont go to see it. I am sure there are things we as fans do not like that you do! Hurray for an America where we can all see what we want-and if the neysayers are correct it will not make money, laughs on Lucas-but if it makes a ton....
I can't wait!
I will believe RUMORS about "The Last Star Wars Trilogy" when it actually become spoken of in the Media by George Lucas himself ! ! We all know George Lucas knows how to use the Media for his own purposes..... I'm just sayin' Mr. Fred
I will be there for all of the movies. While there is current chat about this being a money grab, there has been less talk about how these movies are going to effect the next generation. If there is even one child inspired to be the next George Lucas, then it was worth it. There is so little these days that inspire kids to want to do something more than play video games. Seriously, how many children are about to have their imaginations opened up in front of their parents (who saw these same movies when they were the same age, not as polished or in 3D). I for one can't wait to see my son stand up and act as if he is flying an X-Wing or Tie Fighter, or go to duck from a lightsaber. I will be there, & I'll be in armor! Thank you Uncle George!
Conglomerate cash grab.. HECK YEAH ! (George has to pay for the kidos college n maybe another Ranch or something) ...But hey, I saw Star Wars for the first time back in '77 and I remember watching this amazing movie on the BIG screen. It was magic back then. I see it as wonderful oppotunity for yet another generation to share in this same magic of seeing this movie in a theater. ... 3D or no. Hopefully Lucas will do a regal job of it. Huge margin for mucking this up .. but also an opportunity to add greatness to an already AWESOME movie! BIG con: seeing Jar Jar in 3D !!
I LOVE this idea!! My family is a huge FAN of Lucas' work! We watch the Star Wars movies daily. I can't wait for my daughters to be able to see them on the BIG screen; AND in 3D! Sounds like a great idea to me. Thank you,Holly
Does anyone have any insight into how they're going to convert 2D into 3D? For 3D, you obviously need two different view points of every individual object in the entire scene. Unless they recreate everything in CG and project texture maps, I imagine it's going to look like cardboard cutouts on a cartoon like background. Even the backgrounds behind characters will need filling in as in 3D you can somewhat see around foreground objects.
I'll definitely be curious to see how well they pull this off. I'm sure there'll be a 'making of ...' feature that'll be worth watching.
Even if it wernt in 3D I would still see them again in theaters, the special effects look great on the big screen with the emersive surround sound. Cant get that at home. wish they would re-release other good movies like ALIENS + AVATAR at least once a year for one weekend or a monday night special. like if there are no good sci-fi movies out at the time.
After I saw Avatar, I commented to my fellow attendees that it was probably the second best viewing experience I had ever had in a theatre-Star Wars-A New Hope-being the first. The theatres were full for weeks with people seeing it over and over. I saw Avatar three times in IMAX, but Star Wars many more-in 2D, too! I'll check it out in 3D-hopefully in IMAX!
"Welcome to the party, pal."
"I am serious... and don't call me Shirley."
"When am I gonna learn how to punch?"
"These go to eleven."
"Benjamin, have you ever been severely beaten about the face & neck?"
"Just keep swimming, swimming, swimming."
"You're gonna need a bigger boat."
"Jessica's got cable."
