The Saturn Awards, presented by an entity known as the Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy and Horror Films, annually honor the best, brightest and most popular in the genre, and last night's 39th ceremony was no exception. What other awards show would recognize Clark Gregg as Best Supporting Actor, hand Jonathan Frakes a Life Career Award, laud Cloud Atlas's awful makeup, or give Killer Joe, well, anything? The biggest winner of the night, though, was a little film called The Avengers, which took home the Best Sci-fi Film Award, among other major categories. And although we're still not sure how Best Costume winner Les Miserables fits in to sci-fi/horror unless it's Russell Crowe's singing, the show was filled with some great moments: a heartfelt, emotional tribute to sci-fi master Richard Matheson by his son, Danny Elfman's humble acceptance speech for Best Music (Frankenweenie) and the awarding of William Friedkin (The Exorcist) for Lifetime Achievement.
