For those who couldn’t get enough of the cinematic masterpiece that was Baywatch: White Thunder at Glacier Bay, great news! A new Baywatch movie is in the works and while we’ve known that for a couple years now, the news that Rescue Me scribe Peter Tolan has just turned in a script has put this latest addition to the babes/hunks in red swimsuits franchise on the fast track to getting made.

On top of this joyous revelation is word that the new script includes roles for series stars David Hasselhoff and Pamela Anderson. Fans of the show may have a few reservations though. During a recent podcast, Tolan revealed that his take on the franchise was more in the vein of Stripes, the 1981 Bill Murray-John Candy flick.

"It’s not based on the show in any way, though there are a couple winks at the show. I don’t know anything about the show. I didn’t watch it in preparation for writing this."

While Baywatch may not be on the same level as Marvel and DC Comics mythologies, you have to wonder just how good a movie can be if the writer doesn’t know anything about the source material. It’s the equivalent of someone doing a superhero movie and not looking back at the old comics for reference points. Even more pressing, why mention Stripes? That only conjures up images of Murray and Candy sprinting along a shoreline in slow motion and while conceptually funny it’s also quite disturbing.

That been said, are you up for another Baywatch movie? Will this franchise ever die or will we be seeing Baywatch: Attack of the Transforming Vampires from Mars.
