'Raiders of the Lost Ark' Returning to Theaters, Will Screen in IMAX

The first name in adventure is about to become the biggest action icon at your local multiplex. 
 
The original Indiana Jones film, Raiders of the Lost Ark, is returning to theaters as part of Paramount’s promotion for the upcoming Raiders Blu-ray box set. And ScreenCrush was able to confirm that Spielberg worked with IMAX during the restoration process to retrofit Raiders to the 70mm format so it can screen in IMAX theaters around the country. 
 
The re-release, according to the site, will include both traditional IMAX and the Digital IMAX Experience. And while a press release is expected to confirm participating theaters in the next few days, Austin’s Alamo Drafthouse already confirmed that it will have a 70mm print of Spielberg’s rousing thriller from Aug. 31 to Sept. 6.
 
The future of cinema appears to be torn between IMAX and 3D (and, in certain circumstances, films that use both), with directors like James Cameron and Chris Nolan leading the charge. Personally, if I had to choose one over the other, I’d lean toward IMAX instead of retro-fitting classic films for 3D presentation. And I'd hope that directors revisiting their classic works would find new ways to tweak the presentation, as Spielberg appears to have done with the Raiders audio. Speaking to the N.Y. Times, Spielberg explained that his audio has been bumped up for surround sound.
 
“When the boulder is rolling, chasing Indy through the cave, you really feel the boulder in your stomach, the way you do when a marching band passes by, and you’re standing right next to it,” Spielberg said.

    Not ONE single IMAX showing in all of upstate NY??? Y'know, there's an entire STATE outside of the 5 boroughs that deserves to see the film, too, yknow? Buffalo, Rochester, Syracuse, Albany... remember us?!?!?!
