Poll: You Pick the Box Office Winner (5/6-5/8)

By: Derrick Deane on May 6, 2011 at 1:10PM Comments (34)

Even though the summer movie season kicks off this weekend with Thor hitting theaters everywhere, last week's champ Fast Five raced out of the gates early to a record-setting $86.1 million opening weekend, the highest April debut ever. While the Vin Diesel action movie should still pull in big numbers in its second week, a Marvel superhero and a pair of romantic comedies will also take aim for top honors. Let's see who we've got…

What's The Scoop: Chris Hemsworth stars as the hammer-weilding Marvel superhero from Asgard who gets cast out by Anthony Hopkin's Odin and sent to live amongst humans like Kat Dennings and Natalie Portman. Fair trade?
Why It Might Win The Weekend: Positive buzz and overall great critical reviews have this movie poised to rake in $60-$75 million this weekend. It's grossed $3.3 million on midnight screenings alone, and has already taken the international box office by storm.

What's The Scoop: Paula Patton and Angela Bassett star in a Prince and the Pauper-esque romantic comedy that also co-stars Loretta Devine and Mike Epps.
Why It Might Win The Weekend: A mix of the Tyler Perry crowd - plus those who aren't interested in seeing Thor or Fast Five - could propel this movie to big numbers this weekend.

What's The Scoop: Ginnifer Goodwin falls for her best friend's fiancé in another romantic comedy, co-starring Kate Hudson and John Krasinski.
Why It Might Win The Weekend: Spring is the season of love, and Kate Hudson has definitely made her niche in the rom com genre. Fans may be interested in seeing what kind of hijinx she gets into this time.

My Prediction: As Tom Hiddleston's Loki is bound to find out, it's really hard to bet against the Norse God. Look for Thor to smash its way to the top of the box office charts with a $70 million opening weekend.
My Pick of the Week: Going to mirror my prediction and go with Thor. For the indie movie fans, though, two movies opening in limited release that are getting overall positive reviews include the Mel Gibson-starring/Jodie Foster-directed The Beaver and Rutger Hauer in the aptly titled, Hobo With A Shotgun.
Now it's your turn to pick this week's box office winner. Sound off below with your thoughts and comments.

I have seen it in like 2 places now. Why would someone make a deal about Thor making more money than The Beaver. Of Course it would make more money, 1. It was in wide theaters unlike Beaver 2. Thor was advertised out the Wazzo and Beaver didn't get much. And 3. It was a Super hero movie in the "Summer" . Sorry i just had to vent to something.

It's so funny how they take these posts seriously when it's obvious who will win the weekend.

Even though Thor is such a ***** he'll end up winning the weekend despite the fact that this movie hasn't gotten many good reviews and apparently not a lot of people were stoked for the film. But since Fast Five has already been out for a week I doubt it'll beat Thor, if it was Fast Five's first weekend this weekend then it would probably beat Thor.

Is there really any kinda of competition here? I mean maybe fast5, but its been out for awhile, why stick it in the same category? The others wouldn't be box office hits, even if they weren't released the same weekend as thor. good grief.

thor was lame marvel did it again follow the comic book origin why because it's prefect.Spider man ok why we let the web coming out the hand go but those that know he had web shooters and cartridges. The F F and dr.doom didn't go into space together. The X-Men the time line with the characters was wrong if you know the origin. D.C will always be better because if you stay with in the realm of the origin it comes out a winner just the right villain adds the flavor perfect case in point green lantern first flight perfect story marvelous. Started with the origin great villain

How the hell won't Thor make 100 mil in its US opening weekend? It's Marvel, he is a known character, it's 3D ... Iron Man did 102 mil back in 2008 ...

Yeah, seems like Fast is still a giant in box-office, but they deserve it, Fast Five was by far the best one. As for Thor ... I damn hope I won't be disappointed! Driving 2 hours tomorrow to see it in IMAX3D!

hey I'd see "Thor" for Natalie Portman as a "master astrophycist" - at least she's more believable than Denise Richards as a "rocket scientist" or model Rachael Taylor as a robot scientist in "Transformers"...
