Peter Jackson returns to Middle-earth this weekend with The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey – part one in a planned trilogy that will entertain J.R.R. Tolkien enthusiasts until 2014. Audiences have six different ways to experience Jackson’s new epic, from 3D to IMAX to the much-debated 48 frames per second (the director’s preferred method).
The Hobbit, Peter Jackson
3D, IMAX, One Big Scene
Enjoyed the movie and didn't realize they were making a trilogy. Did not need to make this in 3D--it's only a way to make more $ for theaters and movie--really $18 for this in 3D was not worth it.
Meh, honestly I was fairly disappointed, too many deviations and additions to the storyline already. I think I see where they are headed with it: I suspect a significant portion of the second movie, if not the majority of it, will be dedicated to the White Council confronting the Necromancer, which was only reported by Gandalf in the book. Things I liked: How they handled the songs, most of the acting, nods to LOTR including the entire first scene (cut from Fellowship of the Ring) and Saruman's dismissiveness in council (mentioned in Two Towers I believe, when Gandalf was musing how far back Sarumans treachery went.) Dislikes: Rock Giants, rabbit drawn sled, and IMHO god awful CGI, high def, High FPM 3D did this movie no favors.
The movie made me want to go back and read the book again. I can't quite see making 3 movies out of the one book, but if the other 2 are as great as the first, it will be well worth it. And while I don't remember the rock giants in the book, they made for a great section of the movie. Seeing it in Imax, 3D and 43 frames per second was a great experience!
I would have taken the entire rock giant scene out and put in some time for the Eagles to talk at the end. I am going to have to go read the book again but this was the one part that felt completely made up... it just didn't belong. Granted the visuals were nice (and I could see it making a hit in Titans movie) but how did this help develop Bilbo's story at all?
Incredible visuals/effects in the new HOBBITT (trilogy) movie: I was swept away by it's majestic bigger then life scenes and the Cast rocked!! Great movie and will see it again.

"These go to eleven."
"Benjamin, have you ever been severely beaten about the face & neck?"
