The Lone Ranger arrives in theaters next weekend and producer Jerry Bruckheimer and the cast have been taking part in a worldwide press tour to promote the film. Indiewire got a chance to sit with Bruckheimer to chat about the film and during the course of the conversation, the uberproducer began to chat about a couple of sequels we've been hearing get buzzed about – Pirates of the Caribbean 5 and Top Gun 2. Here's just some of what Bruckheimer had to say. You can read the full write-up over on the Playlist.
Recently, Pirates of the Caribbean 5 locked in their directors. Unlike the first four movies, neither Lone Ranger director Gore Verbinski nor On Stranger Tides' Rob Marshall will be helming the project. Instead, it's these guys:
Ok, right, so who are they? That's Joachim Ronning and Espen Sandberg. Still not ringing any bells? They directed last year's Best Foreign Language Feature Oscar nominee Kon-Tiki.
They also directed the 2006 action-comedy Bandidas starring Penelope Cruz and Salma Hayek as a couple of bank robbers.
"We saw [Kon-Tiki] early on, maybe six months ago, and I saw some of their other work, which I thought was terrific. That convinced me," Bruckheimer said. "They were interested in doing it and they flew over and we showed them a script that we were working on and they had really amazing ideas." Bruckheimer also offered a progress report on the sequel. "Last Friday they came to Hollywood and settled in and started working on it. We're hiring production designers now and it's moving forward."
So what can we expect in this fifth Pirates movie (besides more kooky Jack Sparrow)? Bruckheimer said the film would maintain the previous movies' mixture of high-seas adventure and supernatural horror.
At least part of the fifth film will shoot in New Orleans. "We're certainly going to be filming in Louisiana because of the tax breaks and I think there might be a sequence there. But it will also be set in the Caribbean, obviously."
The conversation then turned to Top Gun 2. Bruckheimer said it's still being worked on.
Christopher McQuarrie (The Usual Suspects, Jack Reacher) is no longer working on the script for Top Gun 2.
"He's working on Mission: Impossible 5," Bruckheimer said.
So he basically just switched projects starring Tom Cruise… after writing and directing a movie starring Cruise (Jack Reacher).
Is Cruise becoming McQuarrie's muse?
McQuarrie also wrote the scripts for Jack the Giant Slayer and The Wolverine and is also attached to another Tom Cruise project: All You Need Is Kill.
Back to Top Gun 2, though. Bruckherimer said, "We're at a point right now where everybody wants to make it. For a while, it was, Tom's excited about it...but the studio doesn't want to commit...or the studio is excited and Tom doesn't want to do it. And that's been going on for 30 years now. We're at a point where the studio is excited and Tom is excited." (Thanks to Oprah.com for the pic below.)
Perhaps not as excited as Bruckheimer, who received his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame yesterday and was joined by Johnny Depp and Tom Cruise... Pirates of the Caribbean: The Impossible Mission anyone? No? OK.
Pirates of the Caribbean 5 will be in theaters July 10, 2015 and Top Gun 2 could be flying in right behind it in the near future.
Are you excited about either sequel? Are there any rising stars that you'd like to see cast in either sequel?

who cares about top gun ill watch as many pirates movies as they will make
Let's hope Pirates 5 turns out swell and I think we've had enough Pirates for a while after this.
I agree. What do you think about Top Gun 2? The movie is an old movie. You think why make another Top Gun movie.
I have not seen Top Gun before
"Welcome to the party, pal."
"I am serious... and don't call me Shirley."
"When am I gonna learn how to punch?"
"These go to eleven."
"Benjamin, have you ever been severely beaten about the face & neck?"
"Just keep swimming, swimming, swimming."
"You're gonna need a bigger boat."
"Jessica's got cable."
