'I Am Legend' Sequel Reignited at WB, Hoping for Will Smith to Return

By: Alison Nastasi on February 17, 2012 at 12:17PM Comments (13)

It looks like Will Smith will be reprising his role as scientist Robert Neville in the post-apocalyptic actioner I Am Legend, according to Deadline. The follow-up to the 2007 blockbuster has been talked about for several years, but deals have just recently been finalized with Akiva Goldsman; who was a producer on the first film — and Smith's Overbrook Entertainment.

Despite his studio being attached, Deadline is saying that Smith won't commit until the script is ready. No word yet if director Francis Lawrence will be returning, either, but Arash Amel is working on the screenplay. His work on the Grace of Monaco script — about the 1962 period in which Princess Grace Kelly actively saved her nation's government from being overthrown by the French — has made him an in-demand screenwriter. So far, we know that the new installment in the viral pandemic tale is not being called a prequel, which means we're wondering how they'll handle connecting it with the first film's ending. They may, however, base things off of the alternate ending, which has a drive-off-into-the-sunset type of conclusion. However, Will Smith had previously described the new movie as a prequel back in 2008

"We have a fantastic prequel idea ... we’re still trying to work through a couple of bumps in the story. It’s essentially the fall of the last city – the last stand of Manhattan. The movie would be…within the body of the movie D.C. and then Manhattan would fall as the last city. It’s a really cool idea trying to figure it out…there’s a reason why we have to take a small band and we have to get into D.C. So we have to make our way from New York to D.C. and then back to New York."

Is a prequel/sequel totally unnecessary, or is Neville's story compelling enough for round two?

I wish they would have ended it like the book's, maybe they will with a sequel.

If its not a prequel, I don't want to see it. Sequels are usually the worst and I don't want to see somebody that everybody knew blew up, waking up from a dream or somehow finding a way to escape the blast. Let's start from the beginning and even have a part in the prequel where maybe his wife survived the helicopter explosion and comes to attack him as one of those "monsters".

Didnt he blow himself up in the first movie? Regardless what the blueray directors cut was, the movie that was shown in the theaters is the one they go by, and it will be interesting to see how he survived the explosion.

Prequel ok, sequel don't think so... I do not want to watch a soap opera on the big screen. That's one heck of an explosion to wake up from, and if Will Smith's character survived that massive explosion then the zombie survived too. Hmmmmm, I'll pass on that one.! I didn't know there was too endings, so Hollywood will definitely attempt to manipulate that , but it will be tight to explain as a sequel in any case. Look forward to the final product...Stick with a prequel, I'm in!

There is two endings: 1. He blows up the lab with him in it. 2. He just leaves with the woman and child. If they continue with the original ending they can start with Will Smith waking up from the explosion, dazed, and looking like crap. If they continue with the alternate ending they can start with Will Smith in the camp or at a new site looking for survivors, maybe in soldier attire. PS I have seen the movie. Ive seen it like 25 times. Personally I like the original ending idea better cuz it would make the beginning of the sequal intense.

I would like it to be a "sequel" instead of a prequel: I AM LEGEND is one of the best Action Thriller-Supense I've seen, it's creepy origionality puts you on edge. Actor Will Smith character my Heart went out to him being the only man on Earth, I was so happy when he & his canine cross paths with that lady & her son. And although I did like the ending and I always had hope he made it through even though he blow up the lab when those chilly looking infected people were breaking down the entrance: that was scary intense. Awesome movie, a seer Classic and look forward to Will Smith's & Writting Crew return with another powerful Script!!!

I loved I Am Legend, but I don't see how they could make a sequel. If it even sounds as good as the first one, though, I'm there. Anybody reading this who hasn't seen it should go rent it now.

I'm interested in finding out how they plan on doing this since he dies in the 1st one? Wish they hadn't killed him off!! Would be cool to see him battle the diseased.
