How Massive Can 'The Hunger Games' Actually Be?

By: Sean O’Connell on February 29, 2012 at 2:30PM Comments (16)

As The Hunger Games fast approaches, Jennifer Lawrence is trying her best to temper our expectations. It’s not working.

"The movies could be a huge flop, and everybody is getting excited about nothing," the Oscar nominee tells Celebritext. "Who knows?"

Well, anyone who has been paying attention knows that Gary Ross’s adaptation of Suzanne Collins’ best-selling novel was on track for blockbuster status. The books come with a sizeable, built-in audience. And Lionsgate studio was angling The Hunger Games series to be the logical replacement for the recently departed Harry Potter franchise and the soon-to-be-defunct Twilight saga.

Then two events occurred within a few days of each other that led me believe that even those of us expecting big things were seriously underestimating the drawing power of The Hunger Games.

First, the studio announced a multi-city mall tour that promises to bring Lawrence, Ross and other Hunger Games cast and crew members to select cities to meet and greet with fans. Twilight enthusiasts know that Summit regularly does the same thing with its vampire-and-werewolf franchise, suggesting that Games was taking a page out of Twilight’s massively successful playbook.

Then, in a move that raised even more eyebrows, The Hunger Games surpassed a record for advance ticketing that previously was held by The Twilight Saga: Eclipse. In addition, Hunger Games accounted for 83% of ticket sales on the day they went up for the public. I knew awareness was high, thanks to Super Bowl commercials and selective interview spots on major networks. I didn’t know the Games had that big of a following.

Prior to these two events, I would have argued that it’s unfair to compare The Hunger Games to Twilight, and to expect this new movie to perform at the same box office level as the wildly popular vampire series. Now, I’m not so sure. The first Twilight opened to $69.6 million in 2008, on its way to a $192 million gross in the States. The sequels only went up from there, with Breaking Dawn: Part 1 topping out at $281.2M last November.

Could The Hunger Games hit those numbers? Surpass them? And will March 23 – the day The Hunger Games opens in theaters – mark the beginning of the Summer Blockbuster season … which seems to kick off earlier and earlier each year? Share your thoughts on The Hunger Games. How big could it possibly be? Or is Lawrence on to something when she sheepishly suggests that the survival story of Katniss Everdeen could be "a huge flop?"

I don't know if it will be bigger but why are we comparing? These are two TOTALLY different book series. I'm a fan of both and can appreciate that. I think the Hunger Games with start and end strong. They are amazing and well written books. Katniss is a strong female character to look up to.

One audience that I think you are all missing are seniors. I'm well past 65, and THG books were engrossing as a dystopian tale, underlaid with a strong sci-fi vibe concerning how the theatre for the games worked. (Let's hope the theatre is not done with a "Lost"-like approach where stuff just shows up with no explanation.) I'm looking forward to a good tale well-told. We hope the movie is as faithful to the books as the Swedish version of "The Girl With The Dragon Tatoo" was to those books.

Why is Hunger Games and Twilight always in the same sentence. They don't go together at all except they are both by Summit. I think hunger games has more substance but hopefully it is in the right hands. Not just 'lets make a lot of money and have the lowest budget possible' type of a film. It needs to play out for the 17 and older audiance not the 13 year olds. It will have more substance an maturity if they do it that way.

Whether 'The Hunger Games' box office report is greater than that of either 'Twilight' or 'Harry Potter' depends one thing and one thing only: How the film compares to the book. Both of its 'peer' series tie remarkably well to their shelf-bound counterparts which has allowed the sequels to spawn and for the five- and eight- film series to be as well received and adored as they are. This series is coming at the perfect time to draw audiences of both series, the predominately male non-Twi-hards will be more happy to see this film, and the non-gender-specific audience from Harry Potter will be seeking a new series to fill the void. So, 'The Hunger Games' is going to be big, without a doubt. How big remains to be seen.

The hunger games will be way better. I'm a guy, and (especially for the first book), the romance took the backseat, and a strong action-filled plot drove the main storyline, and I really liked it. As i read, I was afraid that the action was going to slow down, and the romance would pick up too much. But it was very good. I don't know single one of my friends (guys and girls) that don't wanna see it... Also, The Hunger Games not only had a trailer in front of breaking dawn, but also mission impossible and Super Bowl XLV. I think it's got a good shot at pulling a audience similar to Harry Potter's.

it will because I know much more people that the hunger games appeals to, the romance as a sub-plot makes it more entertaining for everyone I know, the main factor is that it draws in teenage boys as well

Although a Twilight fan myself, I believe The Hunger Games may gross more due to male following being afded, something the Twilight Saga didn't have much of. Hunger Games appeals to both sexes so it's going to bring in fans that skipped out on Twilight considering it a chick flick. Harry Potter fans looking for a new franchise to follow will probably join the Hunger Games fans. And those who are burnt out on waiting for Twilight movies will probably join the ranks as well. I'm not saying each franchise is going to lose it's followers, I'm just saying Hunger Games has a big chance of grossing more than what those franchises did because out had followers from both plus some that were fans of neither.

It's already beaten Twilight (Breaking Dawn pt. 1) as far as pre-sales go. Which leads the experts to believe that it'll get more $$$ than New Moon and Eclipse which is pretty much a definite seeing as how Twilight sucks anyway while the Hunger Games is better in every way.
