Hasbro Toys continues to take their products and give them big screen adaptations. The latest properties set to be converted for your popcorn-munching theater-viewing pleasure will be Hungry Hungry Hippos, Action Man and Monopoly.
Monopoly has previously been in development at Universal, as a comedy with Ridley Scott attached to direct before the studio scrapped the project due to the fallout from Battleship. Scott is still attached to the project as a producer.
Hungry Hungry Hippos, which debuted in 1978, is a game where players compete with plastic hippos to swallow marbles off of a board. Emmett/Furla principal Randall Emmett says that project will be an animated movie aimed at children.
Action Man is a British toy launched in the 1960s based on Hasbro's other hit toy line, G.I. Joe.
While this news will certainly be met with a healthy dose of cynicism, it should be noted that Hasbro's Transformers franchise has grossed over $2 billion at the box office and their G.I. Joe franchise is prepping for a sequel due out next March. In fact, the only blemish comes from this year's Battleship, which sank at the box office due to a combination of apathy and a bloated production budget.
Emmett/Furla still needs to find studio partners to distribute the films.
Hasbro also has two other games-to-movie adaptations already in the works, with the Adam Sandler produced Candyland taking shape over at Sony and Stretch Armstrong eyeing a 2014 release at Relativity.
