And so the end is here. A magical farewell to a franchise that brightened and became a part of life for millions of people worldwide, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2 has finally arrived and has pulled in $43.2 million in domestic box office receipts from midnight and early morning screenings around the country.
Fandango sold more tickets to midnight and early morning shows than it has for any other late night opening ever, including The Dark Knight and New Moon. With more than 6,000 midnight shows sold out in advance on Fandango, theater owners were scrambling to post additional showtimes. The movie currently represents 93% of today’s total ticket sales. Fandango ticket sales accounted for a third of midnight and early morning tickets sold.
Add in the $82.5 million that has come in during the past 48 hours from international markets and the total rises to a staggering $126 million… and the weekend has just begun. People who spend their time looking at numbers and crunching data have come up with a prediction that this final film could reach $150 million domestically by Sunday night. Considering it’s already almost a third of the way there, it seems like that total is not only attainable but more than likely will be surpassed.
The Dark Knight currently holds the record for the biggest opening weekend with $158 million while the sixth Harry Potter film, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, holds the worldwide opening weekend record with $394 million in tickets sold and Twilight: New Moon holds the single day record of $72.7 million. All of these records are in jeopardy of being eclipsed by this Deathly Hallows – Part 2 by the time the dust settles Sunday night.
