The Five – Essential Jim Carrey Comedies

Admittedly this is probably one of the more difficult segments of The Five to compile. After all, we're talking about contemporary comedic superstar Jim Carrey. Everybody has at least one favorite Jim Carrey movie or character. With Mr. Popper's Penguins opening this weekend, we take a look at five essential Jim Carrey comedies. Ace Ventura: Pet Detective – While In Living Color was hitting its stride in the mid-90s, the rubber-faced comedian finally hit the big time on the big screen after nearly ten years of bit parts and less-than-memorable/successful comedies. In Ace Ventura, Carrey is on the case to try to figure out who kidnapped the Miami Dolphins mascot. Along the way, he also spawns a slew of unforgettable one-liners and catch phrases. He would later return with a sequel in which Ace came out of retirement to solve the mysterious disappearance of a rare white bat, the symbol of an African tribe.

Dumb & Dumber – In the same year Ace Ventura hit theaters, Carrey also starred alongside Jeff Daniels in this cross-country adventure of two good-hearted but incredibly stupid friends who want to return a briefcase to Samsonite, aka Lauren Holly's Mary Swanson. Made on a paltry $16 million budget, the movie went on to gross more than a quarter billion dollars worldwide.

The Mask – To complete the hat trick of 1994 comedies, Carrey teamed with The Blob writer-director Chuck Russell in this CGI-heavy action comedy about a bank clerk named Stanley Ipkiss who transforms into a manic superhero when he wears a mysterious mask. The movie proved to be a huge success, and helped launch the career of Cameron Diaz.

Liar Liar – Following a stretch of movies which found the actor playing The Riddler in Joel Schumacher's groan-inducing Batman Forever and the titular role in the dark comedy The Cable Guy, Carrey returned to his light-hearted comedic roots portraying a lawyer who can't tell a lie for an entire day.

Me, Myself & Irene – With In Living Color long behind, and a new turn toward the dramatic in The Truman Show, Simon Birch and Man on the Moon, Carrey returned to comedy in 2000 with the Farrelly Brothers-directed Me, Myself & Irene. In Irene, Carrey plays two roles – he's a nice-guy cop with a dissociative identity disorder, who must protect a woman (Renee Zellweger) who is on the run from a corrupt ex-boyfriend and his associates. In the ten years since the movie was in theaters, Carrey has gone on to compile an impressive resume filled with more comedies (Bruce Almighty, Yes Man), family movies (How The Grinch Stole Christmas, Lemony Snickets) and acclaimed dramas (Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, I Love You Phillip Morris).
