The Host director Andrew Niccol and author Stephenie Meyer chat extensively about adapting her alien invasion story for the big screen, Saoirse Ronan's stellar performance, Meyer's favorite body part, her musical playlist for the book and more! Check out their exclusive video interview below, and read up on our full description of The Host footage that was previewed at Comic-Con.
The Host footage debuted at Comic-Con giving fans a glimpse into the future, in which the human race has slowly been taken over by an alien species. The defining trait of the takeover is eyes that are rimmed with a glowing circle. The aliens, except for their enforcement team of Seekers, are largely pacifists who don’t understand why humans would rather take their own lives than submit.
Melanie Stryder (Saoirse Ronan) is a recently captured human who has been taken over by an alien who chooses to name herself Wanderer. The chief Seeker (Diane Kruger) requests that Wanderer try to tap into Melanie’s former memories so that they can learn more about the resistance movement. Wanderer discovers that Melanie is not merely a memory but still a highly vocal presence in the body they both share, as Melanie screams out in her head not to betray her brother Jamie (Chandler Canterbury). Wanderer starts to sympathize with Melanie and travels to where the last renegades are hiding. The question is, do the renegades accept her or kill her?
Fans at Comic-Con saw flashbacks of Melanie’s life before being taken – playing with her brother Jamie and falling in love with Jared (Max Irons). Soon after, Melanie attempts to flee a Seeker in a break-neck chase through an abandoned building, culminating in a desperate, multistory leap off it. Melanie somehow survives the fall and Wanderer takes her over. Ronan speaks in a generic American accent for Wanderer and a voiceover Louisiana twang for Melanie. Both voices often overlap showing the equal presence of both characters. The audience was also given a glimpse into the O’Shea brothers (Boyd Holbrook and Jake Abel) attempt to assassinate Melanie/Wanderer. Jared and Uncle Jeb (William Hurt) defend her as Wanderer, who is now in control of the body and won’t fight back.
