Move over, Thor, (at least for the time being). Marvel Studios wants fans to know that it has the NEXT superhero adventure in the pipeline after Thor: The Dark World – which opens on November 8 – so the studio is dropping the first official trailer for next year’s Captain America: The Winter Soldier right now:

Captain America (Chris Evans) is the next Phase One hero – next to Iron Man and Thor – to get a stand-alone sequel, though everything tied to The Winter Soldier will change. For starters, Cap’s origin film was a period war movie. In Winter Soldier, the timeline shifts to present day, where the once frozen Avenger finds that he’s still struggling to adjust to his new reality.

He’s not alone. Cap will be joined on-screen by familiar associates Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson), Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) and the agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. But he’ll be facing off against a scary adversary in the Winter Soldier… which, if you read Captain America comics, you’ll know is a character from our hero’s past.

These Phase Two movies are building toward The Avengers: Age of Ultron, but they still give our favorite Marvel heroes the chance to shine in stand-alone adventures and develop their own storylines. The Winter Soldier, directed by sibling team Joe and Anthony Russo, reportedly will adopt the tone of a 1970s spy thriller, with action and espionage aplenty.

You can see Washington, D.C. in the background of this explosive Captain America poster, which has Cap guarding over our nation’s capital. Tune in for his full adventure when this new Marvel sequel opens on April 4, 2014.
