If you're an actor currently working in Hollywood, there's a good chance you've already auditioned to play Captain America in Marvel's highly-anticipated superhero flick, due in theaters in 2012. While it's already been reported that Matrix baddie Hugo Weaving will play the iconic Captain American villain Red Skull, we still don't know who will be donning that classic red, white and blue costume…and this is after a whole slew of recognizable and not-so-recognizable names have tried out.
What was once thought to be John Krasinski's (The Office) role to lose has now turned into somewhat of a casting mess as producers and director Joe Johnston slave over names and faces in an attempt to find the guy who will best fit the job. Keep in mind that whoever they do wind up casting will have to sign on for multiple films, including The Avengers, and so that little nugget of info is probably one that's slowing down this process considerably.
The latest news is that both Channing Tatum and Ryan Phillippe (who starred opposite one another in Stop-Loss) have auditioned for the role. Tatum is the guy who I thought long ago would be best for the role, and I remember speaking to him about it roughly three-or-so years ago when he was still a fresh face. Phillippe, on the other hand, would be an awful choice; he'd bring way too much smugness to a role that calls for a heckuva a lot of heroic coolness. Fans are also rooting for Chris Evans (who's like a smaller, more charismatic Channing Tatum) to win the part.
Will one of these three become our next Captain America? If it were up to you, who would you want to win the part: Chris Evans, Channing Tatum, Ryan Phillippe or someone else entirely?
Captain America, Channing Tatum, John Krasinski, Ryan Phillippe, Hugo Weaving
If you look at the actors that are playing today you will see the best for these rolls are guys that grew up in watching and imatating them. Think about what makes it great its not the pretty boys. It is the boys that know the characters and played them when they were small children. Sorry but I think someone like the Rock or Jason and, even John Cenea could be good. Channing Tatum needs to play another GI Joe seriers he really had it together in that show.Just like the rest of them Superman tall dark handsome well built, Thor very well built long blonde hair, I am sure that who ever it is that gets the role will be just right. The one I am waiting for is Wonder Woman who will that be? Like all the rest there is some mighty big shoe to fill
Always thought Paul Walker would get the role!
Too bad Ben Affleck locked himself to Daredevil.
Marvel, and the studios are getting better at these movies, love how they are doing Iron Man. With Capt America being a less known hero, if they do a great job with it, they could really put him on the map.
I think a really strong ACTOR, with the body build of an MMA fighter needs to play Steve Rogers.
IMO, What has made SpiderMan and Ironman, the hits they are, is the perfect casting done for the heroes. AND the suit. You have to nail the suit! This will be critical for Capt America! A great suit goes along way in carrying a franchise even if you miss the mark a little with the actor (Batman)
If you don't get it right, you have another Daredevil going straight to video
Sorry I can't see anyone else in the role but Jensen Ackles. He has the perfect look. I can not imagine Channing Tatum or (ugh - again?) Matt Damon in this role. Ryan Phillppee? Maybe.
Of the three choices given, I'd choose none. I'd make a suggestion for Mark Valley.
I believe that role of Captain America debuting in 2012 should belong to JASON STATHAM! He is much more experienced in combat and duels. He totally rocks and kicks butt like no other guy can! Tall, built, handsome and quite the fighter, as you all know from all his movies pretty much! Sorry Channing or Ryan! Jason you were made for this superhero!
I wish brad pitt would do it.
I agree Sam Worthington would rock the heck out of this role!
matt damon could pull it off or nathan fillon
Neither.. but if i had to pick one of thes three... Tatum
take that back... i definately dont want either of these 3 .. period haha. id be down with Damon, Garrett Hedlund, Chace Crawford, or Mike Vogel.
I would go with Channing but I would love if Ryan got it as well just to get a big role for him
Well Hugh Jackman has already played Wolverine so he'd be out for the same reasons that Chris Evans is out. Matt Damon could be cool but I'd like to see a lesser known actor take on the part personally. Maybe a television actor like John Barrowman from "Torchwood". I agree with Jason Perry though, it would have to be someone who would be able to hold their own vs. Downey Jr. & Jackson to be sure.
I think Ryan Merriman would be great! He is up and coming and I haven't heard of him doing any current projects.
channing tatum already tried playing an american hero(g.i.joe) which bombed and made a horrible movie. Ryan phillippe eh. Chris evans is already the human torch so how would that work out. i think hugh jackman or matt damon might fit it better.even kellen lutz
While I like Channing he would get lost trying to play Cap alone not to mention opposite Samuel L, and Downey Jr. Remember GI Joe? Cool for the kids but we are talking adult action plots and legendary planning. I think Sam Worthington would be an awesome choice! He has a good onscreen tough guy quality and enough subtle vulnerability to pull off a believable Cap!
Whoever is cast to play the role of Steve Rogers/Captain America would have to be a capable enough actor and also have some sort of screen presence so as not to be overshadowed by actors such as Samuel L. Jackson, Robert Downey, Jr, and Edward Norton. My choice would actually be for Matt Damon, who showed the ability to do action and adventure in the Bourne movies and he meets the requirements of acting and screen presence.
But from the front runners right now, I guess I would go with Chris Evans, he's a decent actor and a role such as this would be one that would propel him into that next level of stardom.
Yes i agree Matt Damon. Chris Evans is already the Human Torch. You can't mix up Marvel Characters like that in my opinion. What if they were to do a huge collaboration like the Infinity Wars in the future?? He can't play both characters.
idk, Chris Evans is a bit more comical and I envision Cpt America being more serious and all about business. He's a trained combatant with high tactical knowledge....i'd rather they go with someone more military oriented. Channing Tatum wouldnt be bad but perhaps bulk up a little more tho.
I would like Steve Rodgers to play the part. He's perfect for it.
oops..."Rogers" I meant.
"Welcome to the party, pal."
"I am serious... and don't call me Shirley."
"When am I gonna learn how to punch?"
"These go to eleven."
"Benjamin, have you ever been severely beaten about the face & neck?"
"Just keep swimming, swimming, swimming."
"You're gonna need a bigger boat."
"Jessica's got cable."
