What’s The Scoop: Zack Snyder (300, Watchmen) returns to theaters with his latest visually stunning epic about a group of girls who use their wild imaginations to help them escape from a mental institution.
Why It Might Win The Weekend: Snyder’s films carry a massive fanbase who eat up anything the guy puts out. Considering this is his first completely original concept (and story), chances are fans will be very interested in watching the girl-on-craziness action unfold.
What’s The Scoop: Based on the popular series of books, this sequel to the hit Diary of a Wimpy Kid once again finds our wimpy kid, Greg Heffley, dealing with all sorts of kid issues, like having an annoying older brother who causes nothing but grief.
Why It Might Win the Weekend: The first Wimpy Kid movie opened in second place with $22 million, eventually going on to a domestic gross of $64 million. Those numbers, if elevated a little bit, could get this sequel a first-place finish.
My Prediction: On paper you’d think Sucker Punch has this win locked up, but bad buzz could hurt its opening performance. It might sound crazy, but I’m going with Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Rodrick Rules for the win.
