We're obviously taking another week off from our weekly box office poll because while there's more than one film arriving in wide release this weekend (Avatar and Did You Hear About The Morgans?), it doesn't take a rocket scientist to predict that Avatar will surely come out victorious. So, in lieu of voting on which film will make the most money at the box office, I thought it'd be fun to take a wild guess at how much money Avatar will make in its opening weekend.
We've been anticipating this epic action flick for a long time now, and 20th Century Fox has spared no expense in marketing the flick big time over these past couple of months. It's already the most expensive film ever made (total costs fall somewhere in the $400-500 million range), and the visionary filmmaker behind it all (James Cameron) promises us a moviegoing experience unlike any we've ever had before. But will all of that add up to box office records?
Some suggest a $200 million opening weekend, which, if it happens, would easily smash box office records. However, with no built-in audience and no A-list stars to draw folks in, does Avatar really have a shot at that kind of money?
