This summer at the movies is gonna be huge. Between major sequels like ‘Furious 7,’ ‘Jurassic World’ and ‘Avengers: Age of Ultron,’ high-profile reboots like ‘Fantastic Four,’ and ‘Terminator: Genisys,’ and some promising new projects like ‘Tomorrowland,’ Summer 2015 has plenty for everyone. Here’s a breakdown of the big movies you need to see.
The latest ‘Fast & Furious’ sequel reunites the whole gang (including Vin Diesel, Dwayne Johnson, and the late Paul Walker) as they fight back against a vengeful Deckard Shaw (Jason Statham). Expect plenty of fast cars, beautiful people, and even more ridiculous stunts. But will this be the last ride for Dom and his family?
Marvel is rounding up all its heroes, along with a few new additions (including Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch), for a new conflict that pits Earth's Mightiest Heroes against the genocidal robot, Ultron. But forget those villains. The real centerpiece of this superhero blockbuster may be the epic clash between Iron Man and Hulk.
Set 30 years after ‘Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome,’ Tom Hardy replaces Mel Gibson in the lead role, as "Mad" Max Rockatansky. He must lead a woman named Furiosa (Charlize Theron) across a deadly post-apocalyptic desert.
‘Pitch Perfect’ stars Anna Kendrick and Rebel Wilson are back in this sequel to the 2012 sleeper hit. This time, the Barden Bellas set their sights on an even more ambitious Acapella competition – this time with some international flare.
Little is known about this mysterious Disney project (inspired by the theme park ride), but that's part of the film's mystique. With ‘The Incredibles' Brad Bird directing, ‘Lost's’ Damon Lindelof co-writing the script, and George Clooney starring, this film is easily one of the most promising blockbusters on tap this summer.
Sam Rockwell, Jared Harris and Rosemarie DeWitt headline this reboot of the classic horror film from producer Steven Spielberg. Like the original, the remake once again centers on a suburban family tormented by vengeful spirits and one very creepy clown.
‘Bridesmaids’ director Paul Feig reunites with Melissa McCarthy for this comedic take on the spy genre. McCarthy plays an under-appreciated, desk-bound CIA agent who suddenly finds herself with the opportunity to join her more suave colleagues (including Jason Statham, Rose Byrne, and Jude Law), in the field.
Four years after the release of 'We Bought a Zoo,' director Cameron Crowe finally has a new film. ‘Aloha’ is a romantic comedy set on the sun-baked beaches of Hawaii. Crowe’s assembled a great ensemble for this rom-com, including Bradley Cooper, Emma Stone, Rachel McAdams, and Bill Murray.
Following ‘Furious 7,’ Dwayne Johnson returns to theaters to fight an earthquake. Rather, THE earthquake, as Johnson’s skilled helicopter pilot must save his daughter (Alexandra Daddario) from the ruins of San Francisco.
The third chapter of this popular horror franchise goes the prequel route, with a story set before the Lambert family hauntings. This time, psychic Elise Rainier (Lin Shaye) uses her ghost whispering skills to help a teenage girl escape the clutches of a supernatural threat.
Apparently no one in the ‘Jurassic Park’ universe learned from the cautionary tales of the first three movies. This latest sequel finds a fully-operational park, complete with a brand new species of dinosaur (the Indomitus Rex) primed to devour all attendees. And if that weren’t enough, Chris Pratt stars as a “raptor whisperer” of sorts. Can’t. Wait.
This Sundance hit and critical favorite stands-out among this summer's sequel-heavy fare, as a truly original piece of filmmaking. In 'Dope,' Malcolm (Shameik Moore) is juggling both college applications and life in a tough LA neighborhood. One invitation to an underground party leads to some very funny, and very compelling, life lessons.
The film focuses both on a girl named Riley, as she deals with a stressful cross-country move, and the physical personifications of her emotions (voiced by Amy Poehler, Lewis Black and more).
Seth MacFarlane's saga of the world's raunchiest stuffed animal continues. MacFarlane will again direct and voice the titular role, while Mark Wahlberg returns as Ted's best friend, John. This time, Ted struggles to prove in a court of law that he is capable of raising a child.
Channing Tatum is back as Florida’s coolest stripper in this sequel to 2012’s ‘Magic Mike.’ Several other familiar faces return (though not Matthew McConaughey) as Mike and his fellow strippers take a road trip up to Myrtle Beach to attend a stripping convention. What could go wrong?
Time travel plays a key role in this franchise reboot, which casts ‘Game of Thrones’ Emilia Clarke as Sarah Connor opposite her would-be protector from the first film, Kyle Reese (Jai Courtney). Arnold Schwarzenegger reprises his iconic role, playing multiple versions of the relentless T-800, while also battling a younger version of himself.
After two highly successful ‘Despicable Me’ movies, the cutesy sidekicks known as the Minions are branching out into their own feature film. This time, our heroes (led by fan-favorites Stuart, Kevin and Bob) will do battle with ambitious villainess Scarlet Overkill (voiced by Sandra Bullock) and her inventor husband, Hern (Jon Hamm).
Oscar-winner Sir Ben Kingsley and Ryan Reynolds team up for this sci-fi, body swapping thriller. The former plays a terminally-ill wealthy man; the latter is the shiny new body he gets uploaded to. When he starts asking where his new skin suit came from, he finds himself on the run and at risk of dying a second time.
Marvel's follow-up to ‘Avengers: Age of Ultron’ will shake things up by going small. Really small. Paul Rudd stars as Scott Lang, a former criminal who finds a shot at redemption when he meets genius inventor Hank Pym (Michael Douglas) and gains possession of a suit that lets him shrink his body and control insects. Will this become the latest hit franchise from Marvel?
Judd Apatow's fifth directorial effort sees him returning to some familiar subject matter, as he explores another hilarious goofball who struggles to embrace adulthood and maturity. In this case, Amy Schumer stars as a woman who lives a life free of responsibility and commitments -- until she meets a man (Bill Hader) who causes her to question her lifestyle.
Adam Sandler stars as a slacker who is called upon to repel an alien armada who mimic classic arcade games, like Space Invaders and Donkey Kong, as they begin their planetary invasion.
Hollywood's latest reinvention of the Peter Pan mythos serves as an origin story for both Pan (Levi Miller) and a not-yet-villainous James Hook (Garrett Hedlund). Both characters will join forces to battle the fearsome pirate Blackbeard (Hugh Jackman).
Tom Cruise reprises his role of Ethan Hunt for a fifth time, along with other returning favorites like Jeremy Renner and Simon Pegg. This time, IMF finds themselves dissolved once again -- just as an "anti-IMF" team threatens to do the type of things that require face masks and hanging onto planes to stop.
This sequel to the comedy classic National Lampoon's Vacation is Rogue Nation's biggest box-office competition. It centers on the Griswold's eldest son, Rusty (Ed Helms), all grown up and about to embark on a family road trip of his own. Along for the ride is Christina Applegate as Rusty's wife, with cameos from the original film's Chevy Chase and Beverly D'Angelo.
Fresh off losing a lot of weight for ‘Nightcrawler,’ Jake Gyllenhaal underwent another physical transformation in order to star in this biopic about acclaimed middleweight boxer Billy “The Great” Hope. Antoine Fuqua directs.
Drawing more heavily from the Ultimate Fantastic Four comics than previous films, this long-awaited reboot casts Miles Teller, Kate Mara, Michael B. Jordan and Jamie Bell as explorers who are transformed by their exposure to a realm called the Negative Zone.
This biopic from director F. Gary Gray explores the rise and fall of the hip-hop group N.W.A. Starring Jason Mitchell as Eazy-E, Corey Hawkins as Dr. Dre, and O'Shea Jackson, Jr. as Ice Cube, the film traces the group's rise to prominence in the music scene.
While 2015 will see the release of new James Bond and Mission: Impossible sequels, this year will also deliver a big-screen adaptation of this classic TV spy drama. Henry Cavill and Armie Hammer play agents tasked with preventing a mysterious organization from distributing nuclear weapons and destabilizing the globe.
If you saw the first 'Sinister,' then you know why its star, Ethan Hawke, isn't returning for Part 2. Instead, Shannyn Sossamon ('A Knight's Tale) headlines this horror sequel, playing a mother of two who moves into the house that provided most of the first film's jump scares.
