A strange thing happened once studios began splitting up big, highly anticipated franchise finales into multiple parts. On one hand the initial idea sounded promising -- here was even more of something we love so dearly. But there was some backlash, especially with adaptations, because stretching one book into two movies always hurt part one simply because it wasn't as cool as part two.

So when it came to the two-part Avengers finale -- announced last year as Avengers: Infinity War Parts 1 and 2, due in 2018 and 2019 respectively, there was definitely some uneasiness among fans that this would suffer from feeling like one story stretched into two. When Fandango sat down with Infinity War (and Captain America: Civil War) writers Stephen McFeely and Christopher Markus, they confirmed that this Avengers finale is going to be completely different.

"It’s not like Harry Potter or The Hunger Games where so many people know what the story is and they know where you’re cutting it, and so therefore they know how much is left," Stephen McFeely explains. "[With Infinity War], no one will know anything."

Christopher Markus adds, "We don’t want to steal your money. We’re definitely not taking one story and cutting it in half. We have a benefit because it’s not really based on the same source material. Winter Soldier was based on Ed Brubaker's run in the comics, but it’s not the same. Civil War is not the same, obviously. Infinity War is going to have that same ratio of comics to movie."

Civil War directors Joe and Anthony Russo have already confirmed via Uproxx that the Infinity War title is going to change to help better identify these as two different films, however don't let that lead you to believe the films aren't related. "Obviously they’re related, but how do you craft two movies out of one central concept?" McFeely says. "It’s been an interesting math problem."

As far as where they are in the development process, Markus and McFeely haven't turned in their first draft yet, but they're close. When we asked if they had the power to pick and choose from any character introduced into the Marvel Cinematic Universe so far, they confirmed they did... for now.

"So far they’ve given us the pick of the litter," McFeely reveals. "After we’ve turned in our first draft, I can answer that better. When we first got the job we went through the entire MCU and wrote down everyone who was still alive. From Happy Hogan to Rocket Raccoon to whomever. We put them all up on a wall and said, okay, this is who we have to play with. Now what’s the story?"

Obviously the duo are remaining tight-lipped on the story and their specific plans for it, but they did reveal that, like Civil War's big airport fight sequence, there will be another "splash page" moment.

"It's one big splash page," McFeely jokes. "It's four hours of splash page."

Captain America: Civil War hits theaters this week. We'll have a bunch more spoilerific stuff with Markus and McFeely that you can check out right after the movie opens in theaters. Stay tuned!
