Opinions about Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice have varied widely, yet nearly everyone agrees that Ben Affleck delivers an entirely convincing performance as Bruce Wayne, aka Batman. We know that Affleck will return as the Dark Knight in Suicide Squad and the two Justice League movies, but what about that long-rumored solo Batman movie?
Short answer: we don't know yet. We first heard the rumor in June 2014 and since then rumors have swirled periodically about the prospective solo movie, centering on whether Affleck might direct it and when we might expect it to fly into theaters. We've also heard rumors that comic book veteran (and chief creative officer at DC Comics) Geoff Johns would be cowriting the script with Affleck. While Affleck said he was open to the idea of directing, he was otherwise noncommittal about starring in or writing the potential project.
Now Affleck has confirmed for the first time that he's working with Geoff Johns on "something." Specifically, he told DC All Access (via SlashFilm): "Geoff Johns is a brilliant guy. I consider him to be the most valued resource on all things comic book, and every time I like something in the comic I always mention it he goes, ‘oh yeah, I wrote that.’ Now I just think he’s bulls****ing me and he says he wrote everything. You know, he and I are working together on something and I really am excited about it, and I love him, he’s the best."
While it's possible that Affleck and Johns are working on another DC comic book property, it seems far more likely that he's talking in his usual noncommittal way about the Batman solo movie. We'll have to wait and see, but at least it's sounding more promising by the day.
Meanwhile, another character from Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice has been touted as a possible cast member of the upcoming Aquaman, to be directed by James Wan. The president of the United States, voiced by Patrick Wilson, only has a brief appearance in the just-released blockbuster, but might we see him return in Aquaman?
"You might!" Wan told Coming Soon. Wan and Wilson have already teamed on Insidious, The Conjuring (above), Insidious: Chapter 2 and the upcoming The Conjuring 2, so a future reunion in the DC cinematic universe sounds very appealing.
Again, we'll have to wait to see what happens, since Aquaman isn't due for release until July 27, 2018.
Happily, we don't have to wait quite that long to see The Lego Batman Movie, due out next year. The first teaser was released a few days ago and we've already been gifted with the second teaser, again introduced by Batman (voiced by Will Arnett). This teaser showcases Bruce Wayne's home, known as Wayne Major, as well as Alfred the butler, voiced by Ralph Fiennes and a humorous look at past Batman movies.
Look for The Lego Batman Movie in theaters on February 10, 2017.
