“It’s like hanging out with the coolest kids in the school for a couple hours,” director David Ayer tells us about Suicide Squad, this summer’s all-supervillain team-up movie from Warner Bros. and DC Entertainment. Like Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Suicide Squad will continue to advance DC’s new cinematic universe by flipping the script and introducing a crew of supervillains – not superheroes – who’ll band together to save the day.
“There’s a lot of humor in this – it’s a fun movie,” Ayer teases, adding that the film is essentially about a group of insane people who collide in all sorts of badass ways. “They start out hating each other, and by the end they’d die for one another,” he says.
Just how Suicide Squad fits into the larger DC cinematic universe is still unclear. We know Batman shows up briefly in the film, and Superman is mentioned by name in the latest trailer. We could see some of the Squad members eventually popping up in Justice League or a solo Batman movie (many of the characters are Batman baddies in the comics), and while Ayer is keeping quiet about just how his film connects to the others, he does acknowledge quite a bit of universe-building going on, admitting moviegoers will need to be on the lookout for a ton of little goodies spread throughout the film.
“Let’s just say there’s a lot of framework that’s been installed,” he says. “It’s a very dense movie, in story and setup and visually. There are a lot of Easter eggs, and there are a lot of ways to move forward. Just wait till it’s on DVD and people start freeze-framing stuff.”
And while Ayer also teased a number of “fun things” he’d like to share once the film hits DVD/Blu-ray, he makes it clear that Suicide Squad is still very much a PG-13 movie and will likely not go the route of Batman v Superman and release an R-rated cut down the line.
“We walk the edge, but it’s a PG-13 movie. It was shot as a PG-13 movie,” he tells us. “The cut I’m working on really is my cut, and I’m one of those people who believes there’s only one cut of a movie. But there’s always things that don’t make it in that I think will be a lot of fun to share.”
