Star Wars: The Force Awakens hasn’t even debuted and it’s already created a new superstar in the world of pop culture. We are, of course, talking about the irresistible droid BB-8.
While we must wait until December for the film, there’s no reason why we can’t celebrate BB-8 now in pumpkin form! Think about it, he’s round, he’s cute, he’s perfect for your family’s Halloween pumpkin project. Here’s how you can create your own gourd ode to BB-8.
What you’ll need:
One big white pumpkin
One small white pumpkin
Orange paint
Metallic paint
Gray paint
Black paint
Paintbrushes
A pencil
A black pen
A bowl
Directions:
Step 1: Pick your pumpkin. Make sure that you choose one small pumpkin and one large one. Also, for the small one, make sure it has a stem (you’ll need that later). If the big pumpkin has a stem, cut it off close to the body of the pumpkin.
Step 2: Use a bowl to trace three circles around the circumference of the big pumpkin, then begin to paint the circle edges orange (making them about one or two inches wide). Include four little square pegs jetting out of the inside of the circles. That is the basis for the design on the circles.
Step 3: The folks at Lucasfilm have yet to release detailed photos of BB-8, so to get the rest of the basic pattern of adorable robot, you can use an image (or the actual real version) of the mini BB-8 by Sphero. Add the silver detail shapes inside of the orange circles, add a few lines, a few circles as bolts and whatever other little touch you’re up for including.
Step 4: For the head, draw (with a black pen) a pattern as inspired by images of BB-8, like the one above. Use the bottom of the pumpkin as the top of BB-8’s head. You don’t have to be exact in your pattern, just try to get the overall style of the head. Then fill in an orange circle (that doesn’t go around the entire top) and a silver circle above it. Make sure to include a big black “eye” and a smaller “eye” to the lower right of the big “eye.”
Step 5: To connect the two pumpkins, carve out a small hole out of the stem of the big pumpkin, about the same size of the stem of the small pumpkin. Then insert the small stem into the big stem and push to connect.
There you have it, a perfect Halloween droid to celebrate the season and the upcoming epic.
