Few actors have successfully slipped into the shoes of a beloved character to deliver a new, typically younger version of said character to much acclaim. Perhaps the greatest to ever do it was Robert De Niro, who masterfully played a younger version of up-and-coming mob boss Vito Corleone in The Godfather Part II, two years after Marlon Brando brought us an older version of Corleone that would eventually go on to be one of the most recognizable movie characters in cinema history. Both men were so good in their respective roles that they each won Oscars for their performances.

With the Star Wars character of Han Solo, Alden Ehrenreich is next up to join the list of those who've attempted new takes on beloved characters, and when Fandango sat down with the actor to talk about his new film Rules Don't Apply, we asked just how different this task is from any he's taken on before.

"It’s somewhat different in certain ways, in terms of the world that surrounds the world," he said. "But for the most part the job is somewhat similar. You’re playing a guy – he doesn’t know he’s [an iconic character], know what I mean? What I’m really lucky about is that he’s a great character – such a well-written character, and also a fun character. Plus the guys who are making the film [Phil Lord and Chris Miller] have a fantastic take on the whole thing, and the story they’re telling specifically is going to be really great. It’s fitting into their universe. With the rest of it you just hope for the best."

What many fans are also hoping for is a new take on Solo; something that adds to everything we've seen from him previously across four separate movies. We asked Ehrenreich about that, whether his version of the character will bring anything new to the table. "Yes," he said. "I think you'll see a different side of him."

Ehrenreich said he hasn't spoken to Harrison Ford yet, but he'd like to. "I don't have his phone number," he joked. And when we asked whether he'd be interested in following in Ford's footsteps by moving on from Han Solo to Indiana Jones, the actor played coy.

"I'll play a tree in the background in one of the scenes," he said. "I'll play a teacup."

Stay tuned for more with Ehrenreich as we approach the November 23 release date of Rules Don't Apply. Watch a trailer for that film below.
