If you see one action thriller this year, make it Hanna.
Hanna (Saoirse Ronan) could change her name to Engelbert Humperdink, and no one would even think of laughing, or smirking, or giggling?if they at all valued their lives. She is a teenish version of Jason Bourne, but trained from birth to be a brutal killer and a survivor. Her lethal prowess comes at many costs that she is soon confronted with. Ronan does a magnificent job bringing to the screen the vulnerabilities of the supposedly invulnerable as her character is confronted with things she only heard of in fairytales and bedtime stories. Olivia Williams does a great job with her character, as does Eric Bana; and, while Cate Blanchett is good as a southern CIA spook, I felt like I'd seen that character previous Blanchett films. 'Jailbait Jenny' from 'Tamara Drewe' also plays a minor, yet crucial role in Hanna's character development. Tastefully shot, with an art house flair, and original twists, this movie has the potential to make the coming summer blockbusters feel shallow.
