In brightest day...
Let's get this out of the way: this is an origin story, so there's obviously going to be a lot of emphasis on character. Those looking for a straightforward action film will probably be a bit dragged down by the exposition. But I found it well-paced and altogether wonderfully directed and acted. If you don't know the story, I won't give too much away. Suffice to say that Hal Jordan becomes the Green Lantern... but he encounters more than a few stumbles along the way. It's the classic "reluctant hero" story with a huge emphasis on the journey of the hero to realize his true potential. Now there is some major eye candy here too, with cutting edge special effects that will guarantee a thrilling experience. Meanwhile, Ryan Reynolds turns in a superb performance as the main character, not to mention a capably sinister villain played by Peter Sarsgaard. The action takes a while to get going full speed, but the ending is worth the wait. Let's hope there's more to come from this franchise.
