    A Twisted Modern Fairytale

    by Reesuh

The story of Edward Scissorhands could be seen as the anti-fairytale. Where most childrens' stories start on a low note and end on a high one, Edward's story does just the opposite. Edward Scissorhands (Johnny Depp) was created by a scientist who died before he had the chance to finish building him. Left with sharp blades for hands, Edward is an awkward and lonely young man until the local Avon lady (Diane Weist) takes him into her home where the unique boy is accepted by the community for his talents of triming the hedges - and the ladies hair. When the Avon lady's daughter Kim (Winonna Rider) comes home from an outing with her piggish boyfriend, Edward immediately falls for her. In true anti-fairytale fashion, just as the beautiful Kim begins to fall for Edward, the once-friendly town turns against him. The ending may be more bitter than sweet; however, it is one of the greatest tales of our time.
