CARRIE ~ Best Modern Grand Guignol of All
Brian DePalma's masterfully suspenseful CARRIE is not only one of his first true homages to his idol Alfred Hitchcock, but it also stands alone as the best example of stylistic horror films to come out of the 70s. With a lovely performance by Sissey Spacek as the lonely, disturbed title teen with psychic powers who is the victim of a religious zealot of a mother ( operatically played by Piper Laurie ) and criminally delinquent fellow classmates, DePalma deftly ratchets up the tension as the looming prom of doom gets closer and closer and the fates of friend and foe become tragically irreversible. Perverse, poetic and poignant - sometimes all in the same sequence, this movie is a one of a kind creep fest!
