In this latest offering from Pedro Almodovar, Esteban (Eloy Azorin) lives alone with his mother (Cecilia Roth); a fan of Truman Capote; he's writing a story about his mother for a competition. After he's struck and killed by a car, she sets out to find his father, played by Toni Canto, who's by this time a transvestite named Lola, La Pionera. As always, Pedro Almodovar's cinematic concerns are women, exploring traditional concepts of family, and espousing tolerance. All About My Mother won Almodovar the Best Director award at the 52nd Cannes Film Festival in 1999.
