It's the question on everybody's mind! Who are Rey's parents, and does that explain why she's so strong in the Force? With C-3P0 as our guide, we'll break down the probabilities.
Before We Begin…
Hello there! C-3P0, human-cyborg relations. Let me tell you the odds of who is most likely to be Ms. Rey's parents. These probabilities hinge on a few things:
1. Ms. Rey's strength in the Force.
2. Ms. Rey's flashback of being left behind on Jakku.
3. Ms. Rey's flashback upon touching Master Anakin's lightsaber.
4. Kylo Ren and Maz Kanata's familiarity with Ms. Rey's features.
Are you ready to begin? I have a good feeling about this!
12. Nobody We Know
Goodness, there are so many people in this wide, wide galaxy, that it's just too hard to predict if an unknown person sired Ms. Rey. If it is one of those people, I do hope they're friendly.
11. The Force Itself
We have one case of Force-conception in recorded galactic history, and even that was rumored to have been perpetrated by that brute Emperor Palpatine. I should think that a repeat occurrence, at least within our lifetimes, would be highly unlikely.
10. Jyn Erso
Many remarked that Jyn Erso bore similarities to Ms. Rey. While I agree that they were both female, both brunette and both spirited, I don't know if Jyn would've had time to birth Ms. Rey before going on the mission for the Death Star plans. Then again, it's not impossible. All of you humans do look so similar to me.
9. Han Solo and General Leia Organa
Master Han Solo and General Leia Organa are ever so smart and capable. Although they've both been very busy, I doubt they'd forget that they'd have a daughter, especially when their son, Ben Solo, is so close to their hearts.
8. Emperor Palpatine
Goodness, what a terrible thought! Our Ms. Rey, the daughter of the late, evil emperor? I suppose it's possible, as she heard his voice briefly when she touched Master Anakin's lightsaber. Then again, she did also hear Master Yoda's voice. Hopefully his good would overbalance Palpatine's evil!
7. Supreme Leader Snoke
Military intelligence offers little about the mysterious leader of the New Order, but we understand his power to be immeasurable. While it's possible that he fathered Ms. Rey, I suspect it's unlikely, owing that A. he would be more aware of her, B., that she would likely have figured into his plans, and C., that he is an alien species.
Then again, he does very much look human, doesn't he?
6. Obi Wan Kenobi
As Ms. Rey tells it, she also heard the voice of Master Obi Wan Kenobi when she touched Master Anakin's lightsaber. While Ms. Rey certainly dresses a bit like Master Kenobi did, I doubt he's her father. I suspect that humans just find robes more comfortable to wear in desert conditions. Still, it would be fun if Ms. Rey turned out to be Obi Wan's daughter. I have such fond memories of him.
5. Luke Skywalker
How wonderful it would be if Ms. Rey turned out to be Master Luke's daughter! There are certainly many similarities between them – they're headstrong, come from a dreary desert planet, and are gifted with the Force. And did it look like Master Luke recognized Ms. Rey on Ahch-To? Or was he just surprised to see his father's old lightsaber in her hands? Up until Rogue One, Star Wars was exclusively the story of the Skywalkers, so Ms. Rey inheriting that legacy would make some sense. J.J. Abrams claims that Master Luke isn't Ms. Rey's father… but Abrams also swore that Benedict Cumberbatch wouldn't be Khan in Star Trek: Into Darkness, a sci-fi film about a universe I'm certainly not a part of. Oh, who to trust?
4. Rey's Parents Were Luke's Padawans
We know that Ben Solo – or, Kylo Ren as he likes to be called — and his Knights of Ren massacred the students of Luke's Jedi academy. We also know that Ms. Rey was old enough to remember being left behind on Jakku. Did they leave her on Jakku to train with Luke, only to eventually be murdered? I shudder to think of what might be in store for her…
3. Rey was a Padawan
Ms. Rey is quite adept at using the Force, isn't she? Without any training whatsoever, she successfully Jedi-mind-tricked a stormtrooper (played by Daniel Craig, no less), executed a Force pull, and had an intense flashback ("Forceback," shall we?) upon touching Master Anakin's lightsaber. Is it possible that Ms. Rey once attended Master Luke's Jedi academy and was saved by Luke himself?
Wait, that's a theory unrelated to her parentage? Oh, how embarrassing! I'm so sorry, and accept full responsibility.
2. Rey is a Clone
Believe it or not, The Force Awakens was meant to begin with Master Luke's severed hand floating through space! The tease trailer also featured Master Luke's robotic arm, highlighting this. We also know that Kylo Ren found Ms. Rey familiar and that Maz Kanata said that she'd seen Ms. Rey's eyes before. Is it possible that Rey is a sex-flipped clone of Master Luke? It would explain her extreme Force sensitivity, her familiarity to other characters, her skill with a lightsaber and Master Luke's reaction to her on Ahch-To. It could also explain why Ms. Rey was abandoned on Jakku to keep Master Luke's essence safe. Don't forget, it hasn't been so long since the Clone Wars, which even the New Order references when discussing Master Finn.
Yes, I know that's far-fetched, but I've been saving the most obvious choice. I think we all know it's…
1. Chewbacca & Maz Kanata
That's right, the galaxy's best and greatest dream couple! Ah, how it feels to be in love. Or, so I've been told. Romantic feelings aren't in my programming. Wait, Chewbacca and Maz aren't human, you say? Well, excuse me, but I should think a couple as wonderful as them could produce an offspring as magnificent as Ms. Rey. You think my numbers are wrong? Never tell me the odds!
Oh, that's Master Solo's line.
What do you think of my logic? Sound off in the comments!
