'Star Wars: Episode IX' Now Needs a Director

Colin Trevorrow

More than two years ago, Colin Trevorrow (above) was confirmed to direct Star Wars: Episode IX. At the time, Trevorrow stated in part: "This is not a job or an assignment. It is a seat at a campfire, surrounded by an extraordinary group of storytellers, filmmakers, artists and craftspeople.”

Trevorrow has now departed his "seat at a campfire." According to an official statement: "Lucasfilm and Colin Trevorrow have mutually chosen to part ways on Star Wars: Episode IX. Colin has been a wonderful collaborator throughout the development process but we have all come to the conclusion that our visions for the project differ. We wish Colin the best and will be sharing more information about the film soon."

Speculation immediately ran rampant about the nature of those differing visions. Just a few weeks ago, we heard that writer Jack Thorne (Wonder) had been hired to provide "a fresh set of eyes" on the screenplay, which Trevorrow and his creative partner Derek Connolly had been working on since earlier this year.

Suffice it to say that a new director will be needed as soon as possible. Production is expected to get underway early next year. Who could be available on short notice to take on a big-budget production with very high expectations?

One report claims that Rian Johnson (Star Wars: The Last Jedi) should be placed atop the list of possible replacements, while others have suggested J.J. Abrams (Star Wars: The Force Awakens). or Ron Howard, who has stepped in to complete the Han Solo movie. In the past, Abrams suggested Ava DuVernay (A Wrinkle in Time) as a candidate for directing a Star Wars movie.

Indeed, many people on social media have recommended DuVernay, Patty Jenkins (Wonder Woman), other female directors and various people of color for the job. Thor: Ragnarok director Taika Waititi, however, ruled out his consideration.

We anxiously await an official announcement. Star Wars: Episode IX is currently scheduled for release on May 24, 2019.
