Movie News: Ava DuVernay to Direct DC Adventure 'New Gods'

A Wrinkle in Time

New Gods: Ava DuVernay (A Wrinkle in Time, above with Storm Reid) will direct New Gods for Warner Bros. and DC. Kario Salem (Chasing Mavericks) has been hired to write the screenplay. The film will be based on characters created by Jack Kirby, featuring natives of two distant planets -- one a beautiful paradise, the other a polluted nightmare -- and the war that breaks out between them. Queen and Country

Queen and Country: Ridley Scott (All the Money in the World, above with Mark Wahlberg and Christopher Plummer) is in talks to direct Queen and Country. The thriller will be drawn from a comic book series by Greg Rucka about a British intelligence agent who is pitted against terrorists after an attack in London. A big-screen version has been in development for some time; Ellen Page was at one point attached to star. [The Wrap]

 

Alien: Covenant

The Grudge: Demian Bichir (above in Alien: Covenant) will join Andrea Riseborough (Battle of the Sexes) in a new version of The Grudge. Nicolas Pesce, who directed the acclaimed dramatic horror film The Eyes of My Mother, wrote the screenplay and will direct; Sam Raimi will serve as one of the producers. The original Japanese film revolved around the idea of a supernatural curse that spreads from person to person. It inspired multiple sequels in Japan, as well as a remake in the U.S. that also gave birth to several sequels. [Variety]

 

Ready Player One

Ready Player One Trailer: Tye Sheridan and Olivia Cooke star in Ready Player One, directed by Steven Spielberg. A new trailer showcases a fabulous virtual-reality world in which a contest takes place, which may influence the future. Ben Mendelsohn also stars; the movie will open on March 29. [Movieclips]
