Five years after the Gareth Edwards-helmed reboot of Godzilla, the sequel will finally arrive in theaters, just slightly later than we originally expected. Warner Bros. has changed the release date for Godzilla 2 (tentatively known as Godzilla: King of the Monsters) from March 22, 2019 to May 31, 2019. Normally, a delay would seem to be a problem. But this one is just two months, and the move is to a prime "summer" weekend, meaning the studio considers it worthy of traditional blockbuster season status.
The previous installment was released in mid-May 2014, and since then we've also gotten a sort of prequel within the same "MonsterVerse" franchise with Kong: Skull Island, which debuted in March of last year and made much less at the box office domestically than Godzilla. As far as competition goes, the Godzilla sequel was set to release just two weeks after Captain Marvel. Now it's arriving a month after Avengers 4. That gives moviegoers plenty of time to move on from that giant event picture and get ready for this one.
How huge will Godzilla 2 be? Here's everything we know about the epic-sounding sequel:
What is the plot of the movie?
When we last saw Godzilla in the 2014 movie, he was heading back out to sea. Now he'll be reawakened to battle three classic monster movie creatures: Mothra (the one that looks like a giant moth), Rodan (the giant pteranadon) and King Ghidorah (the three-headed winged dragon). Meanwhile, there will also be human characters, most of them involved with the crypto-zoological agency Monarch, facing off against the quartet of monsters, or at least the three new ones who didn't somewhat save the world last time.
Who will play these human characters?
Ken Watanabe and recent Oscar nominee Sally Hawkins reprise their roles from the 2014 movie as Monarch scientists. They're joined for the sequel by Vera Farmiga, Kyle Chandler, Bradley Whitford, O'Shea Jackson Jr., Aisha Hinds, Charles Dance of Game of Thrones, Silicon Valley's Thomas Middleditch and Stranger Things star Millie Bobby Brown, who plays the daughter of Farmiga and Chandler's characters. Also: Zhang Ziyi, who we heard will appear in future installments as well.
Who is the director this time?
Taking over the franchise from Edwards (and Kong: Skull Island's Jordan Vogt-Roberts) is Michael Dougherty, who has experience with giant monster movies, having co-written and directed the 2015 horror comedy Krampus.

Did he also co-write Godzilla 2?
Yes, the script for the sequel is by Dougherty, one of his Krampus collaborators, Zach Shields, and Max Bornstein, who worked on the previous Godzilla as well as Kong: Skull Island.
Will Kong show up in this movie?
While there's no way Kong will be a major player in Godzilla 2, we can bet there will be at least a hint of his presence at the end, maybe in a post-credits sequence. After all, he and Godzilla face off one year later in the Adam Wingard-helmed crossover Godzilla vs. Kong, due in theaters on May 22, 2020.
When does Godzilla 2 come out?
We can see the king of the monsters go up against his three iconic foes in theaters on May 31, 2019.
