Find Your Courage in First 'Dumbo' Trailer; Here's Everything We Know

Dumbo

Disney's new, live-action Dumbo draws upon an animated film that was released during troubling times. Yet the original's simplicity and warmth attracted audiences in large numbers, and it subsequently has been recognized as a family classic.

Now the first trailer for the new version has been released, presenting events initially from the perspective of two children at a circus before soaring outward. It, too, looks like a film with a positive spirit and an encouraging message for young ones that will also appeal to adults. Watch it, as well as the first teaser, after you catch up with everything we know about the film below.

Who stars?

Eva Green was touted for one of three main adult roles in March 2017. That same month, we also heard about the casting of Danny DeVito (as the owner of a small circus that is acquired by a villainous character who owns a big circus) and Colin Farrell (as a widowed father with two children).

The following month, Michael Keaton was tapped to play a villainous big-circus owner. Alan Arkin joined the production in August 2017 as a Wall Street tycoon, along with newcomers Nico Parker and Finley Hobbins as the children of Farrell's character.

Will the story differ significantly from the original?

As reported by Variety last year, the new version "follows Holt Farrier (Farrell), a former circus star who finds his life turned upside down when he returns from the war. Circus owner Max Medici (DeVito) enlists Holt to care for a newborn elephant whose oversized ears make him a laughingstock in an already struggling circus.

"But when Holt’s children (Parker and Hobbins) discover that Dumbo can fly, persuasive entrepreneur V.A. Vandevere (Keaton) and an aerial artist named Colette Marchant (Green) swoop in to make the peculiar pachyderm a star."

Who is directing?

Dumbo

Tim Burton (above), who boarded the project in March 2015. He directed Alice in Wonderland for Disney back in 2010, which kickstarted the animation to live-action series for the studio. Since then, he's also helmed lighter fantasies, such as Dark Shadows and Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children, which both starred Eva Green.

Who wrote the screenplay?

Disney hired Ehren Kruger to write and produce a live-action version in July 2014. At the time, it was reported that Kruger would be "inserting a new storyline about a human family who somehow goes through an ordeal that parallels Dumbo's."

Kruger first gained notice as a writer of horror thrillers (Scream 3The Ring) and then moved on to script three installments of the Transformers series. He also co-wrote the recent live-action version of Ghost in the Shell.

When can we see it?

Disney has scheduled Dumbo for theatrical release on March 29, 2019.
