Weird, Yes... Interesting, Yes... Thought Provoking, Yes.

Yes it is a strange movie, one with many various turns but it must be so with the changes of time, circumstances etc. I don't know how else it could have been told. I enjoyed it and will watch it again to get more out of it.

    Youth with 5 different plots....

Don't waste your money on this movie! It made absolutely no sense! It started out with one story line and then switched to about 5 other storylines throughout the movie! This is the first movie I have walked out of actually saying, I have no idea what that movie was about. And trust me, I see a lot of movies! Bottom line, they just needed to stick with one plot and role with it from there instead of trying to add more and completely switching the story and in the end making no sense! It was so lame!

    Youth without Plot!!!!

WHat was the point of this movie? I coulnd't tell you! People, SAVE YOUR MONEY!!!!!!!!!!! THIS WAS A BUNCH OF CONVOLUTED CRAP!!!!! I'm pretty sure I counted at least 5 or 6 different plots within the supposed main plot which in itself was so ridiculous, it was hard to sit through the whole movie!!! Too LONG, Too WEIRD, and really not even thought provoking at all! You just really wanted it to be over after an hour!

    Nice cinematography but..

Coppola does a nice job on the visuals. I thought that opening shot of the train station was nice, and throughout often used unique camera angles, and colors. Short of that, this movie had scenes, characters, and story lines that didn't seem needed. Like, what was the significance of Matt Damon/character in the movie? I liked him in Bourne ID, but this was uh random.

    A new cult classic, perhaps

Coppola is back and who knows what that means for the future. He seems to want to make more experimental films and that will be wonderful wherever it leads. This film is a reminder to the whole CGI industry about what a master can do (with the assistance of a master film editor like Murch). It's a visual feast, beautiful to watch and surreal without a computer. Any of us could make these kind of effects with a video camera...if we were Coppola!
As far as the story, it will be a cult classic because of its subject matter: spiritualism, Buddhism, the nature of time, the origin of thought, the meaning of birth and death, and a couple of Nazis thrown in for good measure. The scene with a lightning machine and a horse suspended from the ceiling is a classic (and one we couldn't do ourselves without the cash). Wonderful acting throughout.
And yet...it will be a commercial failure. It's too complicated and too weird. Nothing that a few tokes at midnight can't heal.
