Robert Aldrich's darkly comic WHAT EVER HAPPENED TO BABY JANE co-starring longtime Hollywood rivals Joan Crawford and Bette Davis has aged pretty well over the years and has developed quite the cult status, but the movie itself is still quite a stark look at psychotic behavior stemming from deeply rooted animosities and insecurities. Davis' bravura performance as the mad Jane Hudson who is keeping her sister (Crawford) trapped from public view in their mansion in Beverly Hills only to support her desperately desired comeback is matched by the brooding, claustrophobic atmostphere the writer and director create on a pretty small budget and shadowy black & white photography. Some scenes stand out as WAY OVER THE TOP - but still manage to be riveting in sort of a sideshow freakish way. Great modern Grand Guignol on a budget!!
