What could have been a great film is merely "good."
For some strange reason, the screenwriter has chosen to write a story where the two main characters seem to be drunk or stoned throughout the entire plot. This only serves to undermine the significance of the emotional bond which is the core of the story. It makes the characters seem emotionally retarded. While the two men happen to be gay, the critics have made much of the universal significance of two strangers meeting by chance and falling in love. Unfortunately, the theme of drugs and alcohol plays to a lot of stereotypes about the emotional health of gay people. The impact of the story would have been far more significant if it had occurred without a crutch of alcohol and drugs. As a gay person myself, I appreciate story lines that feature gay characters but this film does nothing to portray us as healthy people.
